*Aaliyah POV*

The sound of my alarm instantly woke me up. I grabbed my phone and turned it off the alarm as I let out a frustrating sigh. The dream to just stay asleep forever will soon come true I hope. I sighed in annoyance and got out of bed and went to go get myself together. I wasn't feeling it today, as if I wasn't feeling it any other day. So I just put on sweatpants and a black crop top and put my hair in a bun. I grabbed my belongings and left my room to go downstairs to the kitchen. For the first time in a long time, it's been quiet in this house. The one person I dreaded the most is not even in sight. Must be a sign to get out before he calls me to do his dirty work. I grabbed a pop tart and a water bottle and stuffed them into my bookbag and quickly walked out the side door. I got to the gate and walked out the yard when I felt myself being yanked around and pinned onto the gate.

"Malik," I said his name in shock.

"Good morning Aaliyah," He said.

"You can let go of me now" I demanded.

"I know you tryna avoid the old man, but he owes me," He said

"He's not up," I said

"Go wake him up." He said,

"I'ma be late for school Malik," I told him.

"Like you give a fuck about school. Go on. Go get my money" He said

"Why don't you get it? The doors unlocked and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't mind a familiar face walking in there"

He pushed me against the gate again

"You think I'm bullshitting with you, Aaliyah?" He asked.

"You can't just wait? Look I didn't see him this morning okay. I need to get to school," I said

Malik pulled out a gun and pointed it at my head.

"Liyah, I'm not in the best of mindset at the moment and I don't feel like being bullshitted right now either. I don't want to have to bust your little pretty heads of yours so why don't you be a good girl, go inside, and get my money for me. I don't have all morning." He said

We heard the door open and when we looked over, it was Daniel, my dad. He came down the stairs and walked to the gate as he took out a band of money from his pocket.

"First of all, get that shit off her head. Because if anything, it's going to be me doing that shit. Nobody else. Next time, I find you doing that shit, your family going to bury you 6-feet under the fucking ground." Daniel said.

He handed Malik the money and Malik took the gun away from my head. Daniel walked back into the house leaving me and Malik. Malik pushed me onto the gate harder, making me fall onto the ground.

"See you around Liyah." He said as he walked off.

I silently cried as I got up and picked up my belongings. I saw Malik get in his challenger and drove off. I wiped my eyes and walked away.

*Chris POV*

I woke up to the sound of the alarm. 7 o'clock. First day of the week. First day of school. Dreadful already. It wasn't that I didn't feel like going to school, I just didn't want to go. I'm still trying to get used to living in New York now. Not really something I was looking forward to but I guess me and my troubles just wasn't for my mother so here I am. Living with my aunt in Queens, New York. I got out of bed and did my daily hygiene and got dressed. After that, I headed downstairs to the living room where I saw my aunt looking out the screen door.

"Morning Stella" I greeted her.

"Morning Baby."

"What are you looking at?" I asked

She remained quiet for a bit and then looked at me.

"Nothing. Are you ready for your first day?" She asked.

"Auntie don't say it like that. I'm not in elementary school" I told her.

"Oh boy hush," She said as she walked past me.

I followed her to the kitchen and we both sat down at the table. I had grabbed an apple while she was smoking her cigarette.

"Let me tell you something right now Chris, I'm not ya mama. She got tired of your shit and it wasn't because she couldn't handle it. She doesn't know how to discipline and she clearly sent you here. You try some shit with me if you want to, I have yo ass be dragged all up and down from Queens to Brooklyn." She said

"Damn auntie okay. I heard that perfectly clear" I said.

"I'm just letting it be known. Don't get kicked out of that school and don't get kicked out here. Now I don't know what's been going on in the streets today okay. Just be careful. Stay out of trouble." She said,

"Yeah, I got you," I said

"Now go on. Make sure you get your classes. And find your cousin. She'll be around." She said

I made my way to the school I was attending. After getting my classes, I went to my first-period class which was Language Arts. As I walked into the classroom, I just took a quick glance. No classroom was different from the other. Same dirty ass tables with sturdy ass chairs with googly eyes mother fuckers sitting in them. One of the cons of being a new student, I guess, is expecting people to stare you down as if you stepped into the wrong territory. I spotted the teacher by her desk and made my way over there.

"Good morning" I greeted her

She looked up at me and smiled.

"Good Morning. Judging by a new face, You're Christopher Brown, correct?" She asked.

"Yes ma'am. But I'd prefer if you call me just by Chris" I said

"That's perfectly fine. Although, I go by the last name Mr. Brown. I'm Mrs. Lee, you're new Language arts teacher. Finally nice to meet you" She said as she reached her hand out to shake mine.

"So is there anything I might need?" I asked.

"Why don't you sit back until the end of class and we'll talk. In the meantime, I am going to give you this sheet of instructions that the class has been working on for the past week now." She said,

"Already?" I asked jokingly

"It's nothing major. I just need to see where you are so if I see any errors that need to be worked on, we can work towards it okay. We'll talk more after class. So just look over it, try to get this done by next Wednesday. We do have sign seats and the only person who has an empty seat beside them is that young lady in the far left corner. You'll sit there for the remainder of the school year unless otherwise." She said

She pointed at the table where no one was sitting and judging by her face, whoever this lady she was talking about is late. I went over there and sat down. Put my bag on the chair since no one was there and looked over the paper she gave me. Homework already. Not noticing, I was being shouted at.

"Hello? Dude, like I've been shouting at you the whole entire time."

I looked and this light-skinned girl was standing next to the chair I had my bag in. I'm not going to lie, shawty fine as hell. Her whole appearance caught me off guard. Until she snapped her finger in my face.

"Don't put your fingers in my face," I said.

"Stop sexualizing me then and move your bag. It's in my chair," she said.

"You know how to ask," I said

She raised her eyebrows at me and picked up my bag and dropped it on the floor on my side and sat down. She glanced at me and then continued to get herself comfortable. Today was going to be a long day.
