Evan had been waiting in his post watching the ceremony take place. He had seen it many times so it wasn't anything special. "I wonder what's keeping Melody, usually she doesn't take long to come back to our post." Evan thought. He was tempted to go look for Melody when he saw her in the distance. She was focused on something but it wasn't yet clear what she was focusing on.
Once she came back, Melody stood silent. She looked as though she was trying to remember something. "Everything alright Mel?" Evan asked hesitantly. Melody didn't respond, she was too focused on whatever was in her right hand. Evan slowly moved in front of her and gently placed his hand on her shoulder. He noticed her eyes looked brighter than her usual color. A moment later, Melody shook her head a few times as she came back to reality. She looked up at Evan, his eyes full of worry. "How long was I standing here Evan?" her voice barely audible. Evan answered"About five minutes or so. What's in your hand?" Melody slowly opened her hand to reveal the crystal. "I found it when I went to get my schedule, it was just sitting there. I've never seen a crystal like this before." she said in awe. Evan couldn't help but smile. He loved seeing Melody in her curious phases and wanted that moment to last. But it was not to be.
Lily's voice could be heard in the distance. "All welcoming committee members report to the club room! Once there, you are to check in names and then report to your classes!" Evan saw the smile on Melody's face fade. "I guess we have to head inside now, good thing we're by the door Mel." Evan said. Melody nodded as she gently placed the crystal in her bag. They hurried inside, checked in and right as they were leaving the room Lily blocked their path. "Looks like I came in at the right time, Melody I have to speak with you alone." Lily said with a sneer. Evan stood on guard, he didn't like leaving Melody with Lily. Melody nodded and turned to Evan and said "Can you wait in the hall for me please? This shouldn't take long." Evan hesitated but left the room as Melody had asked. He couldn't stand Lily, not after what she did to Melody in grade school.
Evan had been absent from school that day so Lily decided to use that to her advantage. She gathered a group of girls after school and they surrounded Melody as she was trying to leave. "Well, well, well look what we have here. If it isn't the broken fairy, where's your protector?" Lily asked with a devious grin. Melody was shaking but answered in a wavering tone "He's not here. Please leave me alone Lily." The group of girls laughed and Lily began to circle her. "No I don't think I will. Without Evan here I can do whatever I want." When she got behind Melody, Lily pulled on her wings and proceeded to hit her. Melody cried out in pain, begging for help and for Lily to stop. She called Evan's name but he wasn't there to save her and the girls just stared. Eventually a teacher heard Melody's cries and got the girls to disperse. Lily was pulled away from Melody and she stormed off. Before the teacher could ask Melody if she was okay, she ran out of the school sobbing. She ran to Evan's house, try to calm herself down as she knocked on the door. When Evan opened the door, she collapsed into his arms as a sobbing mess. He held her, rubbing her head gently and waited until she had calmed down enough to speak. "What did Lily do to you Mel?" Evan asked, his voice gentle and worried. As Melody told of the encounter, Evan could see the bruises starting to form on her body and felt awful. Had he been in school, Lily wouldn't have gone after her. It was on that day that he vowed to stay by her side until the end of time.
Evan was lost in thought when the door of the club room opened. Melody walked over to him, a frown present on her face. Evan cocked his head and asked "What did she say?" Melody looked down and said "I'll tell you after school, I don't want to say it here. Let's head to class alright?" Evan nodded and began they walked towards their classroom. Melody leaned on Evan slightly and he wrapped his arm around her. He mentally renewed the vow he had made years prior,"I will protect and stay by your side. I will fight for you and I will be a safe space for you." Evan tightened his grip slightly, releasing as they reached their classroom. "Ready for a boring lecture?" Melody asked, a hint of humor in her tone. "Nope but here we go." Evan replied, opening the door. They walked inside, took their seats and waited for class to officially begin.---------
