"School shopping is going to be a little hard this year." Mom said. "We're kind of broke and I can't afford everything for all of you."
"It's alright mom." I reassured her, "I think we can manage on last years backpacks and leftover paper."
At the end of my 8th grade year and all trough freshman year, my parents were going through a rough time. There was always disagreement. It never used to be this way when we were younger, and all the sudden it went down hill economically too. My whole life was wrapped around my big 12 person family until the worst year came upon us all; 2016.
She sighed and smiled weakly at me as she looked down at her hands, deep in thought as usual. She always seemed to be thinking about life, mainly the present and the future, but still trying to escape from the past. I felt bad for her. We were all struggling together. Especially little Sammy. He was the little 3-year-old with spina bifida (<definition is at the bottom of chapter). He was always sick and always having to go to the hospital. He required a lot of attention, but every minute is worth it when any minute could be the last.
But that calls for anyone. Not a day goes by that I don't think about it today happening to anyone. Reason is, in the same year of 2016, I lost a very close friend.
"I have a feeling this year is going to be hard," I say breaking the silence. "I mean, I am going to try my best to make it easier, but it's gonna suck."
"As long as you try, that's all that matters." She replied. "Being a freshman is never easy."
"And it sucks because Kyle is still in middle school and I'm never going to see him as much." I say glumly.
"That's alright. Anytime your dad isn't around, I'll let you see him." She reassured. "I know how much he means to you. Even though your father is caught up in his own thoughts and opinions, you've always got me. I've been trying to work on better judgment and less judging of you guys and everyone else."
"I feel like you understand it better than he does. You're actually letting me be free" I say with a slight chuckle.
She nodded her head. "Yeah, that's the intention. But it wont settle smoothly. Your dad isn't going to like any of it."
"That's what I am afraid of" I say. " He'd really flip if he even found out we were together again.
She smiled and hugged me. "Well, it's time for me to go settle down with Sam. Goodnight. Love you kiddo."
"Love you too mom." I reply. I get up from the couch and run up to my messy bedroom.
I rummage through my old stuff to see what I can use for my last first year of high school. Freshman year. I had lots of left over paper and notebooks, but our school gives us laptops so paper is almost ancient. I look for a previous back pack that is in decent enough shape to use and put the stuff in it. School doesn't start until the day after tomorrow, but I'm hella exited. I even have my first outfit picked out.
I grab my phone and post my "ready for school to start" snap on my story. Nobody loves me so no one texts. I put my phone down and get ready for bed. Sleep is hard to come by with all the excitement so I just lay in bed until the next day comes.

"Kiarra it's time to get up." My sister Kay says.
"What time is it." I say rubbing my eyes. "It's a weekend. Dude it's summer!"
"I know. But grandma is taking us school shopping!" She says all exited.
"Oh." I said. "Alright get out then." She obeys as I slowly get up. I pick out a lazy outfit with sweat pants and a T-shirt. I throw my hair up into a messy bun, slip on my tennis shoes, and run down the stairs and I'm greeted by my grandmas happy face.
"Hey kiddo. Good Morning!" She says with open arms.
I go into her hug. "Good morning, How are you?" I say.
"Oh I'm alright. What about you. How are you feeling?"
Remembering I was sick the last time I saw her I reply, "I feel much better. Still peachy."
"Well how about some school shopping?" She says. I nod my head. Along with my other siblings.
