Once upon a time..

There was a kingdom that lay on an island in the middle of the most sparkling sea. In this kingdom there lived a young man who was in fact a prince by the name of Adrian. Adrian would wander the village through out the day, and at night while he lay in his bed, he would gaze out to the sea.

In the village there was a young girl, a peasant by the name of Christelle. She lived alone with her step-father, a man of true wisdom, but a man of bitterness. Christelle’s mother had died and her step-father was all she had left. Although her step-father was not alone, for he had a daughter from a past marriage. His daughter Valerie, whom was a girl of great resemblance to Christelle. Both girls had flowing blonde hair down to their waist, eyes as blue as the sea, and lips the shade of coral. The girls resembled great beauty with their fair skin and their slender limbs. Every boy in the kingdom had their heart set on the girls. But one girl in specific stood out, and that was Christelle. She had the sweetest of all souls, and a smile of pearls. And though everyone praised the young girl of 17, she was despised of her life for all it was worth.

For nobody knew the young girl’s secret, that when she was born, she fell terribly ill. Her mother wished for a fairy godmother to appear, and so one did. The fairy godmother was small wearing a dress of glittery blue. “Madam?” The fairy godmother asked, “What on earth would you need to call upon me for?” “My daughter Christelle, she’s fallen terribly sick. I want to make a wish for her.” She said to the fairy. “Oh my darling, I cannot grant wishes. I am a fairy godmother, not a genie. I can only cast spells that will last lifetimes.” The godmother explained. “Oh but please! My daughter cannot die!” The mother pleaded to the fairy godmother. “I will grant you not that of a wish, but that of a spell. I will make the life of this young girl be spared, but there will be a consequence. When the girl turns 18, she will sprout a fish tail and will be turned into a mermaid.. Unless however, she finds young love before then.” The godmother explained. “But what if she cannot?” The mother asked with tears in her eyes. “Well, the spell has its catches. If she is kissed by true love after she is 18, then her true love will turn into a merman. But only if he chooses to.” The fairy said. “I understand.” Agreed the mother. And with that the fairy godmother turned to the child and chanted:

“Over this young child I fly,

From the wish of a mother wanting to save a life,

This child’s life will be spared at the cost of a spell,

When the child is a woman she will take a spill,

From the cause of a mermaid’s tail.

True love is the escape of this child’s curse,

Kiss true love to have this spell reversed.”

Smoke filled the room and glitter flew, sparks bounced off walls, and the child was as well as new. “Now Darling, I will check in over the years, for I am this child’s fairy godmother, and without her knowing, I will always be near.” And the fairy disappeared leaving a pile of glitter on the floor.

Christelle’s mother always warned her of this curse, but Christelle was in no hurry to rush love. For none of the village men ever caught her eye the way she caught their’s.

One morning Christelle wandered down to the shoreline, she slid her feet out of her slippers and pulled up her raggedy gown, and she walked into the water. She let the waves wash over her feet and she let out a sigh, “I will be doomed to this horrid sea.” She said. Then with a twirl, the girl began to sing:
