In 1932, Highlander Folk School opened in Tennessee. At first, it worked with labor groups. Later, Highlander taught stuff about Civil Rights. In 1955, Rosa Parks went to Highlander. Later, Parks was told to move to the back of a bus in Alabama but she refused to do it .That was against the rules in Alabama. African-Americans were forced to sit at the back of buses in Alabama. Rosa Parks' was brave act helped others fight against segregation.
Martin Luther King Jr. also came to Highlander, He spoke about civil rights. There were some who did not believe in civil rights. They fought to close the school. After many years, they won, Highlander closed in 1961. As segregation started to go away, Highlander reopened.As the school grew and grew and taught more people they adopted the song (We shall over come) as their anthem. It i opened in a different city, with a different name. It is called the Highlander Research and Education Center. Now, after 75 years, Highlander is still open.
Today, the school helps and young people. Highlander shows ways people can work together. It teaches about helping others in small ways.
