My bed has always been a bit uncomfortable, but this is outrageous. This surface was flat, hard, and cold- like a block of ice. And I was standing up, with something digging into my wrist.I pried my eyes opened to find out the obvious- I was not in my bed, sadly. I didn't recognize the room. It was dark, and if I concentrated, I could hear a faint buzz of electricity.
My back was to a pole, with a rope keeping my arms pressed to my side. My ankles were also bound in the thick, scratchy rope, so I couldn't sit down. Judging by both my aching back, arms, and legs, I had been here for awhile.
The worst part was the metal edges digging into my back, most likely drawing blood. I could assume there would be scars.
I hate Monday's.
As I shifted, trying to make myself more comfortable, I heard something very faint along with the faint buzz of electricity. I froze, and closed my eyes to concentrate.
A heartbeat. Now that I was concentrating, I could hear it loud and clear. Based on the volume, it was either from someone with an abnormally loud heartbeat, or they were right behind me.
"Hello?" I finally spoke up, gathering my nerves. No response. "Is anyone there? Although if you are there and didn't respond to my first question, I'm assuming you won't answer my second one..."
As a expected, I still had no response. I was on my own until someone decided to say something. Okay, London, think! What do I remember from before I went to sleep?
---
I had just left the house. I refused to call it my home. My parents were asleep, as I was supposed to be.
But I wouldn't be doing what I was doing if I had a taste for the rules.
As soon as I found a deserted and enclosed spot, I pulled off my cheap bargain-bin jacket and tossed it off the ground. My stepdad could afford to pay me a new one.
Nothing was better then getting to finally be myself. A had worn this outfit hundreds of time, a gift from of the people who had shown me genuine kindness.
Thick but flexible, warm and comfortable. A plain black hoodie-like shirt, pants with two leather sheaths holding a pair of silver daggers, and black lace-up boots. And, the final touch- a simple black domino mask that sadly didn't have actual dominoes on it.
The best thing about this outfits was it was made specifically for me. All of me.
For the first time since Friday, I was able to spread my wings. Long, silver and black metal feathers that always made me compare myself to Icarus. Wings that would need have of worked in real life, but for some reason, here they were.
And yes, they did work. The first thing I did was soar to the top of a building, the biggest one that was abandoned.
My parents house wasn't my home. Because the streets were.
---
And that's the last thing I remembered. Maybe I tripped off the building and died, and this was my purgatory?
You know, for some reason, I think that's a bit far fetched. Frustrated, I banged my head against the pole.
Surprisingly, it hurt. But it helped!
"What the-" I heard someone mutter, groggy and confused. "Where-?"
"I have no idea, don't ask me." I sighed. "I was hoping you knew something?"
"I just woke up." The voice replied. It was deep, smooth, and seemed familiar for some reason. "What was that sound?"
"Me hitting my head against the pole."
"...Can I ask why?"
"I couldn't kick or punch the pole, and it insulted me."
It took me a moment to realize they were laughing, which made me feel a bit better about the situation.
"So, you are...?" I asked, figuring I had better ask them first so they had to be the first to say it.
"My real name or my alias?" They questioned. "Actually, strike that. My alias is Lex."
My heart skipped a beat. "Holy hell!"
"Language."
Despite their chastisement, I was still practically shaking. Lex. Another vigilante had been kidnapped with me. What were the chances?
"And you are?"
"Oh yeah," I responded. "I'm L- Icarus."
"I'm assuming you meant Icarus instead of Licarus?" They sounded excited. "I've always wanted to meet you-"
"I need a better tranquilizer." A new voice sighed, interrupting us. "You weren't supposed to be awake this soon."
"Sorry to disappoint." I snorted. Lex laughed.
"Shut up, both of you!" They snapped, walking up to us. Turning my head, I finally saw them in the dim light. I cursed myself for not hearing her heartbeat over Lex's
She was tall, with half her head shaved and the other curly purple hair down to her waist. Her eyes were a matching electric tone, and I had to begrudgingly admit her hair complimented her hazel skin tone. She was wearing a rather revealing skintight dress, but something told me she didn't care if I thought she was hot or not.
"Hey, can you let us out?" I begged. "I really need to get to school. Well, actually, Can you keep us until eleven? I have a science test I didn't study for-"
"I agree with Kid Icarus." Lex piped up. "Not about the science test thing, I actually studied. About the entire 'letting us go' thing."
"What part of shut up do you two not understand." She growled. "If it were up to me, you both would be dead. But someone else is offering me a hell of a lot cash to keep you alive until they get here."
"Who?" I asked. "Why are you doing this?"
"Watch your language!" Lex added. "And answer Icarus's question."
"I'm going to go and make arrangements." She hissed. "If I hear you two, I will conveniently 'forget' my promise to keep you alive."
I gave her what I hoped was a friendly smile as she retreated to the shadows. I heard a door slam shut, and for a few minutes, it was quiet.
"Got any ideas?" Lex finally asked. "Because I think whatever we're in store for is worse than a science test."
"So like a math test?"
"We're doomed."
