“Our race had certain powers that weren’t shared between any other races” he started. I looked at him shocked. How could he have left that out? I could have been important before. “Why didn’t you tell me before?” I asked him quietly. I felt hurt. Was it because he didn’t trust me? “Because I gave my word I wouldn’t tell you till you learned to use it” he replied looking in my eyes. I could see he wasn’t lying but it still hurt me a bit. Why wasn’t I allowed to know? “Can you explain these powers” I asked him. I was curious as to if what had happened in the corridors were one of these powers. “We are believed to be the direct descendants of Erica. It wasn’t uncommon for people to have powers in the village though some people didn’t. Your powers are usually revealed in times of need. When you learn about your power you can start to control it but if you use it more than your body limits it to it can kill you” he said stopping a few times as if he was recalling it as he spoke. I didn’t ask anything for a little while letting the truth sink in. “We are her last descendants” I whimpered. Now, not only did our race depend on us but also the blood line of Erica. If we died both of those would go with us. This had just made me more determined to fight to live.

We didn’t even have a chance to stop and rest from being on the run for so long. The guards could find out which way we had got out from anytime. They would be after us as soon as they found out and we couldn’t be sure how fast they would catch up to us. I had promised myself that I would put up a fight and this was a good way to start. I could see nothing of them but we kept walking. We didn't stop for anything but water and food. The days wore on tirelessly but we didn't stop. Not when we could get captured at any moment. I kept a close watch behind me even though I knew they wouldn't be seen even if they were behind us. My mind was alert and I flinched at the smallest of noises. I kept seeing movement at the edge of my vision because of how paranoid I was. Daren didn’t seem scared. He walked in a very relaxed way and didn’t stop in between strides if he heard a noise. I didn’t get how he could be so calm if we could get captured at any moment and put back in the room so the lady could interrogate us even more. I shuddered at the thought of the cuts she had given us. It was disconcerting how powerless we were when we were their prisoners. I knew that’s what happens to prisoners but it hadn’t felt good being kept against my will and getting tortured to tell someone something that you didn’t even know.

That night we finally stopped. I didn’t know if I was relived or if I would freak out but after I felt the warm of the fire I melted. I wasn’t scared anymore. As I rested my aching muscles I realized how hard I had been working. I had never gone through so much physical work in my life like I had since I came here. I could see the muscles starting to form on my arms and legs. I didn’t really notice them before but now they were prominent and I could see them in plain sight. The warmth of the fire made me feel more comfortable and forget my troubles for a little while. When Daren was relaxed he always had a small smile on his face. Some of his face was shrouded in shadows cast by his hair. He held his hands over the fire. I watched as the flames licked his palms harmlessly. I tips tickled his hands but he didn’t show any sign that they were burning them. I watched the flames entranced at how Daren controlled them so well. Soon he pulled his hands off from the flames and started to stare down at the dirt below him. I wondered why he was so silent. My throat hurt and I guessed it was sore so I coughed lightly. Daren’s head shot up at the sound but when he saw it was me he turned again to look at the ground. I couldn’t help but wonder why he wouldn’t look at me for more than a glance.

The wind rushed through the trees that night. I shivered as it reached my skin. It was a cool breeze. We had put out the fire when the wind started blowing. We didn’t want to start a forest fire. It would destroy so much land and might be an easy way for them to find us because who else would be traveling in this isolated forest. The night hosted a whole new series of strange sounds. Some sounds sounded like metal rubbing against metal while others sounded like cries of animals. The stars were the only source of light left but the illumination was limited because of how far they were. Or was it because they were so small? I puzzled over the question. In my eye they looked like they weren’t that far but they were small but on Earth they were far away and big. The stars here had a different feel then on Earth. Some of them were outlined by a color with the inside white. Some had tails even though they didn’t move. I was never done being fascinated by the clarity the outline gave the stars. I squinted closer at the stars and to my amazement they had eight sides. They were like two four sided stars over lapping each other. They were so beautiful and they filled the night sky. There were too many of them to even count. I smelled something burning and panicked. I looked around wildly. Suddenly I felt something hot next to my face. It almost singed my skin as it passed by my face. The smell of burning filled my nose as I felt my cheeks to see if it was okay.
