Chapter 1

I sit on the cold smooth metal bench of the hospital. The pale white walls of the hallway seem to move closer and closer to me while the dimly lit fluorescent lights emit pale boring light. I slowly lay my head down into my hands and stare down at my boots. The floor is caked with dirt and grime from the disgusting weather outside. I slowly raise my head to look over to my friends who faces are filled with anxiety and worry. Jordan’s usually neatly combed hair is sticking up in all directions while he rubs his face with his hands as if he could just rub the worry out of his face. Next to him I see Emily, the bottom of her eyelids are dark and tired. She was the closest one to him and now he could just be gone, forever and we might never hear his lighthearted laugh or see the corner of his mouth curve up in a smile ever again. A wail of despair echoes through the hallway. I look up only to see his mother crying.

“What happened?” Emily demands as she immediately stands up.

“He’s gone…” his mother says with another sob. I quickly bite my lip to keep the tears from flooding out. I look back to Emily and see her with silent tears dripping down her face and onto the disgusting ground. Jordan’s eyes well up with tears but I can tell that he uses a lot of effort to push them back.

“It seems like heaven gained another angel,” Jordan says with his voice cracking in between words.

“Mhm…” I say with my lips closed so my tears don’t pour out. I hear muffled subs come from Emily again and I see her face buried in her hands with tears flooding her face.

“Let’s go see him one more time,” Jordan says biting his lip

“Ok…” I say

“One last time…,” Emily says between sobs. As we walk into his room we see him peacefully laying in a hospital bed. Tubes go into his nose and connect to a machine that is now turned off. His dirty blond hair is spread out onto the pillow. Emily runs forward and buries her face into his no longer beating chest. Tears flood her face as Jordan and I stand on the side of the bed. Tears start pouring out of my face and I just can’t hold it anymore, tears spill out of my eyes as I kneel next to the hospital bed.

“I miss you already dude,” Jordan says with silent tears dripping down his face.

“We should go now,” Jordan says quietly after few more minutes of sobbing. Emily and I stand up slowly and we slowly shuffle out of the room between sobs.

“Bye,” I hear Emily whisper as we leave the hospital and walk into the car. Jordan jumps into the front seat while Emily and I sit down in the back. The leather seat is cold against my back and the entire car is filled with silence.

1 month later…

Jordan, Emily and I walk into our class. On the outside we seem to have pushed the loss of Felix away from our thoughts but he still lingers there. His laugh, his smile all the memories we have together still flood my brain as I take my seat. As I tried to push all of the memories away from my mind I see a new face. His brown hair is swept into a little corner and Emily’s face immediately reddens as he looks over at us.

“Hey class,” Mr. Patterson says as he sits down on his desk

“I would like you all to welcome our new student from the UK Dan Howell,” He says gesturing over to the new kid

“Hi,” Dan says shyly with his hand stuck in his pocket.

“Ok, so today we will be starting a new project,” He says while clasping his hands together

“I want you guys to make a video on genetics. I would like for you put everything you have learned this year so far. This will be a big part of your grade and will be a partnership. Two to Four people in a group. No more no less.” Jordan, Emily and I immediately make eye contact and form a group right after he finishes talking.

“We should get Dan in our group too, he seems kind of lonely,” I whisper

“Sure,” Emily and Jordan say in unison as we walk over to him

“Hey, would you like to be part of our group,” Jordan says as he claps him on the shoulder

“Um…sure,” Dan says sounding surprised and relieved.

Emily’s POV

I could feel my heart pumping faster and faster as Dan sat down in the desk behind me. However there was something not right.  His dark brown hair framed his face perfectly and his shy personality just made him even more attractive to me.

“I can’t like him though,” I thought to myself

“Just because Felix died doesn’t mean I can just like someone else,” I thought to myself again

“Would he have wanted me to move on?” I pondered. All of a sudden I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I quickly turned around to be greeted by the perfect face.

“Could you pass the papers back please,” he said biting his lip and gesturing towards the pile of papers on my desk

“Oh yeah, of course, “I said blushing furiously as I quickly passed the papers back.

“The paper in front of you is a small assessment just to make sure you know what you’re doing before you start your projects.”

A chorus of groans fill the room and everybody except for Jordan rolls their eyes. The groans slowly fade away as everybody starts their quiz. Within five minutes Jordan struts up to the front and hands Mr. Patterson the paper with everybody glaring daggers in his back this time except for Lily who has a look of respect and maybe even love.

Lily’s POV

Beep! Beep! The annoying alarm interrupts my ongoing dream and brings me back to reality. I quickly turn over on my side and turn of my alarm clock. The tiny screen shows the number 6:00 “ugh” I mutter as I drag myself out of bed and rub sleep out of my eyes. I shuffle over to the bathroom where I take off my pajamas for a quick shower. The scalding water instantly wakes me up and everything around me is clearer. After a few relaxing minutes I step out of the shower pull up a towel and blow dry my brown hair. I then quickly pull on a pair of blue skinny jeans and a lime green collared shirt. When I look into the clean mirror of my bathroom I see a short skinny girl with long brown hair and bright green eyes. A comb sits on the side of the sink and I reach for it in order to comb my messy brown hair into a high ponytail. Suddenly my phone vibrates with a text from Emily.

“Is it bad that I like Dan?” the tiny screen reads

“I could kinda tell u did and no, especially if u r thinking this because of Felix, he would’ve wanted u 2 move on,” I text back as I put it in my book bag and head off towards my bus stop. The bus ride was as annoying as always with douchebags shouting and swearing. I look out toward the dirty window and see Jordan and his dad outside. The bus passed by quickly but I could have sworn that his dad had punched him in the face

“Is Jordan keeping something from us?” I thought to myself as we finally pulled up to the school. I stayed back as everybody ran forward trying to get off the bus first like a bunch of six year olds running towards ice cream. After they finally squeezed themselves off the bus I rolled my eyes and stepped down onto the sidewalk and into the school. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Dan with his eyes glued to the ground walking slowly toward homeroom.

“Hey Dan!” I said as I walked over to him

“Hi,” he said shyly with his eyes still glued to the floor

“So how do you like the school so far,” I asked after a moment of awkward silence

“It’s nice,” he said without elaborating as we stopped at our lockers.

“Hey Lily, Hey Dan,” Emily said blushing as she walked over

“Hi,” I said smiling while Dan just nodded and turned to his locker. 'God, what was up with this kid, he always seems so conservative,' I thought to myself right as Jordan walks straight into me, his hood convering half his face.
