Where I come from, normal and insanity were all just a state of mind. If you didn’t think you were insane then who cares what anyone else thinks. But where I come from was anything but normal, and trust me, that wasn’t just my state of mind. With a group of friends like mine, who could possibly believe that anything at all was normal??

“Heaven? Heaven darling are you here?” my teacher called up the stairs of the 2-storey mansion. Yup, that was friend #1, my teacher. I was home schooled for all 14 years of my life and I must say, I was doing fine without the whole need of human contact thing.

“I’m studying teacher,” I yelled back down.

She put her hands on her hips, “I doubt that entirely. Can I bring you anything while you’re up there reading fiction?”

I sighed,” no.” Somehow she always knew what I doing in my room but still found it necessary to ask. I think deep down she hoped that one day I might just be studying something other than ghosts and trolls.

I flipped my violet blonde hair to one side and turned the page of my new novel. It was interesting, more interesting that slopes and gradients anyway. To be honest, my books were the closest thing I had to human contact.

“Heaven Good get down here this instant!!” yelled a bold voice from the bottom of the stair case.

“Uh oh,” I muttered to myself. It was my dad and judging by the fact that he called my entire name, I must’ve done something bad. But like most kids, I already knew what I had done.

I treaded silently down the marble staircase to see a very upset father with a book in his hand.

I lowered my head, “I’m sorry daddy. I was just curious. I’m tired of learning math and geography; I just wanted something new, something exciting. Just once I wanted to learn about something that was interesting to ME,” I looked at my teacher, “no offense Helen.”

She scowled, “a lot taken! I work hard to give you the education that you need!”

“But what does it matter when there’s something like alchemy in the world! It’s exciting, it open possibilities that other people can’t even dream about!”

“Shhhhhh!” my father said, “you know what would happen if anyone found out Heaven. And you know that my library is off limits to you. Do you remember what happened the last night you messed around in there? You almost severed off your own bloody arm!”

“No...Sorry...I don’t remember. Then again, I don’t remember a lot of things that you obviously think that I should.”

“Well you were a child.”

“I’m sorry father, I will retire back to my old boring school books now,” I turned to my teacher, “now take offense to that!”

That’s right; alchemy, the forbidden art of man. You might have read about it in books or seen it on TV. But trust me; the way they make it seem isn’t half as bad as how it really is. In the real world, it wasn’t allowed to be practiced, it was completely against the teachings of Christians and equivalent exchange...did not exist.
