Hi this is SnitchSeeker here. This story is about hurricane Maria. If there is anything that could be more realistic about the hurricane that you know about and I don't feel free to comment and/or message me.
-PEACE, LOVE, AND READThe first news alert came two weeks ago. It started as a category 4 hurricane. My family didn't think it would hit us... until it did. Here is how my whole life changed from one deadly storm.
"Ariana, get down here this instant, we are going to be late," my mother Georgia called from our small dingy kitchen. I finished my hair and grabbed my backpack and ran down stairs as hurriedly as I could with out tripping out of my older sister, Sofia's, hand me down high heels. I would have worn better shoes for running if I had known what was going to happen that very same day.
I grabbed a piece of toast with nothing on it and sprinted out the door as the school bus was just about to leave. I got on the bus and sat in a window seat. There was barely any kids on the normally packed bus. I wondered why.
The bus driver was different from the normal Latina woman we call Mina. The bus slowly rolled by houses and businesses. There was something different about them that I couldn't figure out. I studied them for a while with confusion. Then it came to me. The houses were all dark. Where was everyone. I could only imagine what was going on because I don't have a television so I don't know all of the latest news updates. I kept looking out the window until we slowly rolled to stop in front of the poor school.
I got off the bus and walked into the school. I went to my cubby and got ready for my boring school day. I put my back pack in my cubby and went to my home room. Ms. Furntina greeted me with a warm, smiley, wide grin across her face. I smiled a polite nod and sat down next to my best friend Brianna. She smiled and we colored until the first bell rang. Then we got up and walked to math class. There was a substitute which was weird because Ms. McLaren always is there. She was even there when she had Laryngitis. We spent the whole class learning sign language which was so much fun because we have a partially deaf student in the school so during recess we spent time showing him our new skills.
We did our daily warm up problem on the board which read:
Hello children,
Sorry I am not here today something came up so I had to call in sick. Please do this problem below and then get straight to work with you exponent partner. The substitute will give you a paper to practice for the test worth 35% of your grade next week on Tuesday. Here is your problem to do. -37 (56+17) - ((-12)(45))= ?Ok I can do this pretty simple actually. First I need to do 56 + 17 which is 73. Ok now I have to do -12-45 which is 540. Simple! Now I have to do -37 multiplied by 73 which is -110. Now all I have to do is -110 - 540 which is... ahh simplest problem ever, -650. The answer is simply -650. I raise my hand and the substitute gives me the paper. Brianna gives me a wide eyed gaped expression is astonishment. I give her a innocent look. "How are you done so fast? I am stuck on the part where we have to multiply-37(56+17)," she explained. I looked at her paper and simply said, "Remember, the first letter of PEMDAS." She looked at her notes and had look of realization. She said, "Oh yeah parenthesis first then multiply. Oh thanks Ariana." I nodded and started my problems I was the first one to finish and so I got to leave early and read next to my cubby. I was reading when I heard a huge crash outside and then a bigger crash. Oh My God a tree had fallen not just outside but it broke through the school and was now laying not but 10 feet away from my out stretched feet. Kids from all over the classroom came out side from the commotion and all gasped. We had just gotten the school back from Hurricane Irma. Everyone started screaming and thankfully Ms. McLaren yelled, "EVERYONE CALM DOWN! IN AN ORDERLY FASION EVERYONE PLEASE MOVE TO THE HURRICANE AND TORNADO SHELTER AREAS IN THE OTHER SIDE IF THE BUILDING! COME ON MOVE!"
We all stayed calm and moved as fast as we could. We all sat along the wall of the shelter area and put our arms above our heads. All we could think about was if we were going to die or get seriously injured or not. One teacher put the news on, from her phone.
The news caster said promptly, "This is Diana Harlow with your local weather. Here in Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria takes affect as a category 4 hurricane. Just as Hurricane Irma tore through all of Puerto Rico, now Hurricane Maria is coming in to torture us even more in these devastating times. We urge people to come to the shelters and to not stay in homes. The schools will be open with cots and animals are welcome. Please bring only what is needed and can be carried easily in an emergency. Please be careful out there in the 100-120 mph winds. This could turn into a category 5 hurricane of up to 156 mph winds to please stay tuned. In the case of a category 5 hurricane DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT GO OUTSIDE!!!!! This Diana Harlow, your local meteorologist. Stay safe!!"
The students were all whimpering with worry. At least 7 students were crying with which teachers were trying to calm down students. One kid, Jeremy, was putting on a science comedy act and that seemed to help the kids calm down. I was just reading.
The rest of the day went down hill from there.
Hi Snitch Seeker again! How was the first chapter??!?!! Please let me know if I was wrong about anything from the hurricane. Hope you liked it. Let me know if you want me to write more of this story and what I should do next. I was thinking of making something like an I SURVIVED... series. I was thinking of doing something like this but on the terrible and deadly earth quake in Mexico City that killed a little more than 200 Mexican citizens on that terrible day.
PEACE, LOVE, AND READ!!
