I was feeling better a week later. I could push Felix out of my mind, even though the memories lingered. I'm getting back on track now. I woke up at 8 am this morning, as usual. Maybe the class was starting late because of that. I grabbed whatever clothes were within reach, stuffed my bag with a bunch of books, and grabbed my scoopy key.Getting to school, I still had time to chow down on a sandwich my mom made while taking off the helmet I had on. The gate was almost closed, and if I had hit traffic, I might not have made it in. The school looked different than usual; it was bustling with students milling around outside the classrooms even though it was already 8 am.I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around quickly. "You?""You're late again? Looks like you need to grab a new alarm clock, Kate." Nina sat in one of the motorcycle seats."Why'd you bail on class? Hasn't it already started?" I asked.Nina shook her head. "Did you forget we have to prep a painting this week? Even today, the school owner's son is making an appearance."Nina pointed at a fancy car parked in front of the school's main lobby. I slapped my forehead, feeling totally out of it today."So, where's Brittney?" I asked Nina."He went out with Jay, probably to grab some brushes and watercolors. Oh, moon goddess! Why do I have to deal with such an annoying task?" Nina complained.I totally forgot that Brittney asked me to bring a modified pencil today. I let out a sigh of annoyance, then glanced at Nina. I noticed she was wearing an ID around her neck."Did the son of the school owner give you that ID card?" I asked, feeling a bit confused."Didn't I already mention that Felix gave me this ID card? He's a student council member," Nina replied. "You brushed him off when he called you, Kate. You should give it to Giselle. He's not the Alpha that's right for you."I snorted, then hauled my backpack in annoyance, slowly making my way away from Nina, who was still busy gushing about Felix and me. Brittney came running up to us with a bag of painting gear in her hand, handing a drink to both of us."What's this?" I asked."It's Nutella late. By the way, have you guys figured out what to paint today?" Brittney rolled her eyes.I shook my head. "I haven't decided what to paint today. I'm not feeling any inspiration."Nina chimed in, "Yeah, same here. But what if we just do abstract paintings for the whole lobby?""The principal told us to paint something with meaning, but she didn't give us any examples. Isn't that annoying?" Brittney complained."Totally, Brittney," I agreed."Ugh, it's so frustrating!" Nina exclaimed. We walked into a room assigned just for us. Originally, the principal wanted us to use an extra-curricular room, but it was occupied, so we ended up in the green generation space. Our jaws dropped when we saw the room in complete chaos. The canvas was torn, and our watercolors were splattered everywhere. One of my paintings was even shattered."What the heck!" Brittney snarled.Nina was in shock, trying to hold back her anger as she smoothed out some of the canvas cloth. I don't get why people have to be so idle and wreck our stuff. I stood there stunned for a bit before deciding to pick up my messed-up painting. "Looks like someone did this on purpose," I finally said."That person is just awful; I'm sure they have some grudge against us," Brittney added. "It's so frustrating! We gotta finish this in a few weeks."Nina let out a sigh, trying to act more grown-up. "It's okay, we can redo it. Don't we still have time?""Nina, we've put in a ton of time on this, and wait, it looks like we should check the CCTV footage.""Now there's the school owner's son. Complaining there isn't really an option," Nina replied.Brittney covered her face. "Oh my God!""We should clean up some of these ripped canvases now. Then we'll repaint," Nina muttered.I'm just sitting there doing nothing. Nina tries to smile at me as if telling me not to give the wrong impression. It feels odd, though, because I can catch the scent of another werewolf in this room."Okay."I try to calm down and grab a broom and a trash can to pick up the shreds of canvas fabric. Suddenly, the wolf inside me starts growling and groaning. I'm taken aback. I don't know what's happening, but the vibe is returning."Kate, what's wrong with you? Are you in pain?" Nina asks me."No, I'm just surprised." I shake my head. The wolf inside me was screaming, "Mate, I can feel a mate!""If you need a suppressant, I can grab it from the infirmary," Brittney offered later."I'm good. I'm just thinking about the jerk who messed up our work," I replied."Don't dwell on it all the time. We gotta figure out what we're gonna paint," Nina muttered.Brittney headed to a closet to grab an apron, but something bothered her. The brushes we left there were gone."Now, do I have to stay calm, Nina?" Brittney raised an eyebrow."We should report it to the principal right away. It's already ridiculous, Nina. Those kids are swiping our brushes," I confirmed."There's the owner's son. Could they have let them in? Who would take our brushes?" Nina was still avoiding the issue.I sighed. When you argue with Nina, she's a werewolf who's stubborn when she's in a bind. She can't compromise and gets super scared. The same goes for Brittney, but she's more assertive than Nina.I scoffed. "Come on, listen to me. This is straight-up theft."We both turned our heads quickly when we heard applause. A girl was clapping and smiling in front of us, holding a painting that had been torn apart."Look, your garbage is done, baby."
