I live in a small village surrounded by walls of ocean and trees.
We are not known on many a maps or by many traveling merchants.
But we are known through lore, in songs sung by drunken sailors on lonely nights and to kings by the finest voices.
Lasireen Lasireen the town by the sea with beauties as far as thy eyes could see,
Lasireen Lasireen the town past the trees,
Lasireen Lasireen the place thou shalt never see,
Lasireen Lasrieen will be the death of thee.
We are known because the seas one must sail to find us are impossibly deadly.
We are known because woodlands one must pass to see us is cursed with a power so dark it leaks into the very land we try to keep.
We are known for the wizards tower you can see peaking through the trees on a full moons night from the closest town on the other side of the woodlands.
And most importantly we are known for our rather peculiar tradition.
Every five years one of the infamous beauties of Lasireen is selected by the wizard. she goes to his tower and never returns.
families sacrifice daughters in exchange for safety in the dangerous little town.
and unknown to others in exchange for safe passage through the woodland to sell their wears even if only a day.
but even with protection, never more than a day.
the forest will come for you, protection or not.
and there is only one thing worse than the Wizard.
The forest itself.
So all marriageable ladies gather in the towns square every five years in their finest dresses. hoping the wizard will pick the girl to her right, or perhaps her left. even if her family will prosper greatly when she goes. she does not wish it to be her.
its been five years now and I'm old enough to enter the square, eligible for the wizard.
although no one believes it will be me. I am the Folwers daughter. not even borne to him by blood.
an unknown girl found on the streets.
and I am not beautiful like the girls of Lasireen.
I am not one of the pretty girls they sing of in the town by the sea.
I do not have to hope it will be the girl to the right or the left of me.
Because I know. not even a blind man will pick me when faced with the girls of Lasireen.
