I woke up to the sound of the alarm telling the kids to get up for the day. I groaned loudly and moved the cover off of my body. As I got up, I moved my red hair out of my face. I sighed and made my bed, when a flashback of parents came to my mind.
**FLASH BACK**
"You go get that side and I'll get this one okay honey?" My mom told me while smiling.
"Okay mommy!" I said while hopping my 4 year old body on the bed to get to the other side.
"Cassandra." My mom reprimanded me.
"Sorry mommy." I said while smiling with my front tooth missing.
She smiled at me and got two corners of the cover while I got the other.
"One...Two...Three!" my mom yelled and she lifted the cover. Being a four year old, I got underneath the cover and pretending that I was a ghost.
"Boo!" I yelled and she pretended that she was scared and grabbed me. She and I started laughing. She sat me down and looked at me with a serious expression.
"Remember when you go to school try your best, think before you speak and..."
"Be careful about who you trust." i finished for her. She smiled and walked me to the car.
I felt a tear on my hand and saw that I was crying. I shook it off and made my bunk. When I finished I had exactly 30 minutes until we leave for school. I got on my hands and knees and looked under my bed. I saw my trunk and grabbed my uniform. As I got to my feet I felt eyes burning into the back of my head. I slowly turned around and saw half of the barracks looking at me. My breath became hitched in my throat. My eyes wondered until I saw a pair of dark brown eyes staring at me. But she wasn't glaring or shooting daggers at me, they were full of concern and curiosity.
I quickly turned around and focused on two things: School and what my mom always told me. 'Be careful who you trust.' I walked to the community showers , but on my way there I saw an unfamiliar face. He had blonde hair and blue eyes. He smirked at me and left to go to the door that said 'Exit'. No one was to leave the barracks without a pass or a notification that gave permission to leave. How did he leave without anything that allowed him to leave?
After my shower and I quickly put on my uniform I ran towards the building. As I sprinted down the corridors, I made it to the classroom. Only five students were there and the teacher hasn't shown up yet. I quietly made it to my seat as the bell rang. The students started to pool into the classroom with the teacher following close behind.
Instead of our usual lesson, she informed us that we are having an assembly today instead of working. Everyone in the room laughed and high-fived each other. I, on the other hand, sank down in my seat. After the announcement she began the lesson.
In a flash, it was time to go to lunch. I grabbed my lunch and went to the library and ate there. As I ate my sandwich, a girl came and sat next to me.
"Hi I'm Kyra." She told me. A girl with cocoa mocha skin and black hair stuck our her hand an gave it to me to shake it. I grabbed it and firmly shook her hand.
"Hi I'm Cass." I told her and went back to eating my lunch.
"So...What are you doing here eating all alone?" She asked me. I decided to answer her question with a question.
"Why are you here?" I said while smirking knowing the answer.
She turned her body and ate her lunch. After that encounter I actually learned about her. She had two brothers and one older sister. She is 16 and the reason she was here was because her family died in an car crash. She was at home when it happened so now she's here. After a while we forgot about the assembly.
We ran down the corridors to the study hall like room and found a seat. We were a little late because everyone was here and the president already took the stand. We sat down quickly and listened to the all mighty president's speech.
"We have been together for 30 years and I have improved so many things. All we need from you is to let me guide you and mold you into a perfect citizen. We are the present but you... are the future. And i-"
I rolled my eyes and continued to read Grey Skies. I had finished two chapters and then I was nudged pretty hard.
I looked up and was greeted by an angered Kyra. "You can't read during a presidential speech!" she scowled me. I laughed at her angered expression. Then I looked at what she was holding.
"What in the world is that?" I asked looking at a sign.
"Huh?" She asked me while staring at the president.
I took her face in my hands while chuckling and pointed to the sign in her hand.
"Oh! I got these from the man at the door." She told me. I looked closely at the sign and something flashed. It was like a little quick memory. And I grabbed the sign and stared at it. Nothing happened. I sighed and looked up and I gasped.
I saw the sign everywhere and by everywhere I mean everywhere. And before I knew it, it was time to go. I grabbed my stuff and went to the barracks. I stripped myself of my uniform and then put on my sleep wear. and I went into a restless sleep ,dreaming about that sign.
