"Shall we have an ice-cream?"

"Yeah sure, the clinical hours will be over in an hour."

"Great come on. Medicine time for my patient."

"Good heavens! I have to change the IV line of mine."

"Bye then, see you at five."

As soon as Tanya left ,I started arranging my articles on the clinical tray. It was another normal day for me. No worries, no concerns, regular clinical hours, thousands of patients, duty and service, that's my life. I am a student nurse in one of the top medical institutions in our country. Apart from theory classes we have scheduled clinical hours where we assist the physicians and the patient, caring for them, administering drugs and overall being at their beck and call.

The day starts  and ends and hours fly by. Little did I know then that that day will stay in my memory forever...

Collecting the necessary articles and putting on personal protective equipments, I was going towards a lady who had suffered from a car accident a few days ago. She had been in a critical condition. My posting was in the casualty ward and I was given her responsibility. She was recovering but yet couldn't take solid food. She was being fed through  intravenous way.

My instructor appeared from nowhere and gave a pointed glance at me. "Good afternoon, sir," I wished. He nodded and kept looking at me as I finished inserting the IV line.  I set the speed of the drip and gently placed the patient's hand on the cot. She smiled as I responded. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my instructor nodding his head. "Passed the test," I thought excitedly.

Suddenly the ground beneath my feet shook. And I heard a rumble like thunder in the distance. I lost my balance and the tray dropped to the floor. I was looking at the mess in horror. But one gaze at instructor's face made me realise he was too astonished to have noticed it. Suddenly his phone rang. He rushed out of the ward almost immediately. I heard one side of the conversation ," Ireland...Oh my God!...crash?...survivors?...OH!! Hmmmm."

"Excuse me sir," I asked.
"A plane from Dublin to Moscow did a crash landing here. A wing with a portion of the plane body broke and a part caught fire. Many are injured and God knows how many are killed. They are bringing them over to our hospital. Ask your friends to immediately report to casualty. We need as much help as possible here ."

Bracing myself for the worst I immediately informed my friends. God knows what I had to see that day. Death is what leaves a scar on you. What if someone dies right before my eyes? Could I bear it? Only time will tell. And time was really short for them. The airport was atleast half an hour distance. I sprinted ahead to join my friends.

A/N The story may not be interesting or romantic so far but I want you to read on. Thanks a lot for your time. And yes please read Daydreams from my collection .That is one of my favourites. 😊
