This is my first story I have ever written, so please bear with me. Constructive criticism is very welcomed. Negative comments are not, however. I hope you  all like!

                                                       PROLOGUE:

“Stay away from The Wall” we were always told as young children. But why?  Of course we were never given an answer or told what was beyond it. Some believe there is a different world that the Elders, basically our rulers, don’t want us to know about. Whether that world is beautiful and filled with mystical creatures that you saw in the fairy tale books or a world corrupted with the awful creatures that live in your nightmares is still a mystery.

Besides the wall and the whole “ruler” thing, life was normal…for the most part. We had everything you would find in a normal city. There were grocery stores, malls with all the name brands, hospitals, restaurants, businesses, school, and stuff like that.

We aren’t allowed to go any were near The Wall. But you always have those who don’t like to listen, and just like in the movies, they don’t come back. There are some that are lucky and that do make it back, but the Elders usually take care of them.

I don’t know why the Elders are so obsessed with that wall, or why it’s there in the first place. Maybe it’s just to scare us enough where they have all the power, or maybe they are just freaks like that. They always seemed different to…I just don’t know what; I don’t plan on getting to know one though…not what after they did.

                                                                  CHAPTER ONE

“Why can’t you pathetic rats ever listen?” a stern voice rose from the middle of the murmuring crowd, “That wall is for your benefit!”  I stood back watching with a blank expression on my face. This has happened so much that I don’t know how to react anymore.  There was two this time, it look like they are brother and sister with the same dark skin and hair. They were younger than me, 13 and 12 if I had to guess.

They sat there with their heads bowed and hands bound behind their backs with an Elder looming over them.

“Wh-wh-what were those…?” the girl barely choked out in-between sobs.  “SILENCE!” the Elder gave a quick kick to her side. A yelp escaped her lips as she bowed her head and sobbed again. “Don’t touch her you worthless-“the Elder grabbed a handful of the boys hair and wrenched his head back.

“You shouldn’t talk to your ruler like that, little shrew” he warned.

“What are you hiding? What were those?” the boy tested again. The Elder began to reach for his gun. “We deserve to know…” he kept on. The Elder slowly started to pull his gun. I drew in a breath and closed my eyes not wanted to see what was about to happen next.

“You guys try to act all big and bad but your ju-“the boy was silenced with a loud crack of a gun. “Noo-“the sound of the gun went off again.

I sighed and slowly open my eyes to see the scene now. They were both now lying on the cement with a blank stare.

I stood there for a few minutes trying to process what just happen. Most of the crowd was now scattered around going on with their daily lives as if what happened moments ago never did.

“They didn’t deserve this…” I mumbled to myself. Looking at the Elder with a gun still in his hand, he turned to look at me with what looked like regret in his eyes. I shook my head with disgust and started to walk away.
