Vanessa

I work at a cafe during the week so I could have a little extra cash on me, and so I could slowly pay off my school bills. I don't have a real job yet because I want to get my masters in physiology before becoming a counselor.  so until then I have to work with the awful smell of coffee.

I got off work at 3:00. when I sat down in my car I looked at the console and saw my "ticket" I got yesterday. I saw his phone number. I didn't know if I should call or not. I put it off a little longer.

As I drove home I realized that I still haven't thanked the man for saving me yesterday. That would give me a reason to call. But, then again he was probably working. So I decided to wait until later to call. When I got home I sat down on the sofa and turned on the t.v. I was watching for about 30 minutes before I heard the phone ring. I quickly got up and answered it before it went to the answering machine.

"Hello?" I said into the phone.

"Hey, is this Vanessa?" I heard the voice say. I recognized it. I had heard it before. Deep, masculine. Oh, I know. It was the officer from yesterday. Perfect timing.

"Yes, this is officer Dean, right?" I asked him.

"Yeah, but you can call me Rodney." I liked that name.

"Okay, Rodney." I liked saying it too. "Did you need anything?" I asked, but at the same time knew exactly why he called.

"I gave you my number yesterday. I figured you didn't want to call, or was too busy. So I decided to call." He said pausing for me to say something.

"Oh, yeah. I figured I would wait until this evening to call because I figured you were at work. I wanted to thank you for yesterday. I never got to." I told him.

Rodney

I wanted to ask her out. I wanted to do it in a cheesy way too. She seemed to like when I was clever.

"Say, I can think of a way that you can really thank me." I told her, slightly cringing.

"How?" I heard her ask.

"You could see me for lunch sometime." I told her. At this point the cringe was real. But I heard her laugh so she liked the offer.

"Um..." I heard her think. She probably thought I was some weird ass cop. "Sure." I heard her say. I felt relived almost. "What would work best for you?" I thought about that. Then responded

"How about tomorrow?" I asked her.

"Okay. Lunch time. Mine is at noon. Will that work for you?" She asked me. I loved the sound of her voice. My lunch wasn't until 12:30 though. But I could take any early lunch for a girl like her any day.

"Yes. That will be perfect. I'll see you then, at the cafe in town." After we said our goodbyes and hung up, I leaned back in my recliner chair and turned on the t.v. I figured someone like her could really benefit my lonely life.
