Chapter One
I walk down the hallway trying to distance myself from my mother who was unfortunately forcing me to volunteer at the hospital she works at. I didn’t want to be there especially during summer break. Too many sick people. She said it would make me a better person. But who cares if I am or if I’m not.
I follow her through the long hallway trying not to stare at the people who were going through something I knew nothing about. She took me down the hall to a room full of uniforms.
“Here.” She says and hands me a uniform in my size
I take it and change my clothes right there. It’s a red scrub outfit which wasn’t necessarily bad but I’d rather wear what I have on.
“Go down the hall to the end make a left Mrs. Joanne office ask if there’s anything she wants you to do. “
I nod my head okay and leave my mother in the uniform room. The hospital was pretty big and I decide to explore instead of finding out what I’m supposed to be doing. I walk down the hallway trying not to stare at the people in the rooms. They had to be kids why couldn’t she work at a hospital for adults not for kids. This is where you bring your kid when they’re really sick where they can get help 24/7. Where they stay the night and you have to come visit them. I don’t understand how my mom could do it.
“What are you doing?” A voice booms behind me. I stop in my tracks.
“I’m a volunteer.” I say to the boy standing in front of me. He towers over me and his hair wild chestnut hair sticking out all over. He wears the same uniform as me.
“I’ve never seen you here.”
“Yeah I’m new….I got here today.”
“Okay.” He says and a flashes me a grin. “What’s your name?”
“Cameron.”
“Full name.”
“Cameron DeLaPorte.”
“You don’t have a middle name?” He frowns.
“Cameron Louise DeLaPorte.”
“Nice to me you Cami…I’m Sebastian Cooper.”
I laugh.
“Is something funny?”
“Can I just call you Cooper?”
“Maybe.”
I laugh again.
“Your mother…..”
“Diana you probably know her.”
“A little.” He said and stared down at his feet.
I smile a little before saying something else. “So are you here by choice or being forced.”
“Being forced.” He answers and ran his fingers through his shaggy light brown hair. “You know what I have to go.”
“Alright…I’ll see you around then?” I smile at him and he hurries off.
I watch as he walks away pulling the ends of his wild hair and he turns the corner and is no longer in sight.
I spend all day like this exploring the hospital. It’s kind of hard watching the kids through the windows. But I try not to let it get to me. I stay in the five to twelve section because I know my mother will barely be down that hall she works in the thirteen to eighteen section. (The kids closer to my age)
