Typically anyone that goes to the lost woods gets ... well ... lost. They say people become so disoriented that they never come back. What goes in doesn't come out. The only ones capable of navigating these woods is a race of children known as the Kokiri. They live within the forest and understand the way it bends.
Some say they live within a clearing in the wood. This clearing is named after them called the Kokiri Clearing. It is hard to get to though. One can only get to the Kokiri by traveling through the lost woods. So basically in order to navigate the lost woods you need to talk to a Kokiri, but the only way to talk to a Kokiri is to navigate through the lost woods. It's not the ideal situation, but the princess seemed to be confidant that I could do it. She said I needed to try and understand the forest as If I was a Kokiri. I wasn't sure what that meant, but I needed to figure it out.
Within only five minutes of entering the forest, I was completely lost. I tried to exit and to find myself back to the fields of Hyrule, but it was useless, no matter what turn I made I was still inside of the woods. At first I thought up a clever way to stay on a straight path. My plan was to focus on a tree directly in front of me. Then I would walk to that same tree. The third step was to focus on a new tree directly in front of the first. Finally I would walk to the second tree. I would repeat these steps over and over again so that I was walking in a completely straight line. I thought it would work, it was a fool proof plan. How could I get lost if I was walking a straight line? I had to meet the Kokiri clearing eventually. Right?
Wrong.
Despite my best efforts I still crossed the same skull shaped rock at least twenty or more times and it wasn't just a different skull shaped rock each either. No, it had to be the same one because it was always next to this tree that had and exact two way fork in it with a big ugly knot directly under the split. That tree and rock were so obviously frustrating to me. However, at least it was a sign of something familiar. Something that helped me know I wasn't just lost in an endless void of trees and shrubbery.
The forest must have been working with a sort of magic. That was the only explanation. Here into the forest straight wasn't actually straight. It was right left up down and everything in between. If I wanted to go straight, I had to zigzag and find the right path through the maddening shifts in reality. Despite moving in a straight line all this time, because of this forests magic I was really just moving in one great big circle.
There must be a correct pattern of movement that would lead me to the kokiri clearing. But what is that path? I could wander aimlessly for hours and never find it. Their had to be another way. I was looking for any sign I could think of. I felt no wind, so I couldn't follow a breeze. However I think I heard something. Something in the distance. It was music.
It was a lively song, something happy. It felt like the forest was telling me to stay hopeful and awake. I felt like the Kokiri wanted me to find them. I couldn't believe I didn't notice the song before now. It was so obvious now from where I was standing. So strong and prevalent. I wanted to kick myself for being so absent minded.
I approached the music. At first it had me headed in a straight line. But then suddenly as I took another step forward the music became greatly muffled. It was almost as if I turned away from the music. And maybe i did. Curiously enough when I took a sharp left the music became louder again. So I approached the new direction and the music stayed bold.
I was right, the forest was bending in a way unlike usual reality. North and south was just constantly shifting. The sound swayed with the woods, and despite there being not even a small breeze the sound seemed to travel on the wind. With this new music discovered, It was easy to tell where to go. I could hear my way through the forest, and so eventually I finally hit the clearing.
