Chapter 1
I watched as my family and Khali disapeared and so did the shoreline as we went farther into the ocean. Things just all hit me at once, one in particular was that the kiss that me and Khali just shared was the last we would have for months. The only home I ever knew, the dead island, was gone. The only way I could go was to my destiny, where ever it should take me.
I stayed on board for a while and waited, I had nothing better to do and I needed the sun. The sun always made me feel better. But now it just reminded me about all the times me and khali watched the sun set together. I went toward one of the crew and asked him "is there anywhere I can go to sit down inside?"
He pointed behind me "just take that door and you'll see the beds" he said
"Thank you" I replied. I walked through the door and saw the beds. The only word I could describe them was sad. The sheets were blue, probably baby blue at one time, but after years of stains and only being washed once or twice every six months they were a dark blue color. I layed on the sheets and of course they smelled pretty bad but I was so tired I didnt care, I pulled out my wallet and took out the picture of Khali. I kissed the picture goodnight and I was out.
I woke up to panic across the ship, wondering what happened I went to the deck of the ship. Blood was all over the floor. I looked around and saw where it was from, one of the new deck hands got his fingers stuck on a rope and when the rope pulled it ripped the skin off of the two fingers. The others assured me everything was okay that they had a first aid kit and theyed take him to the emergency room as soon as we reached california. I knew hed be okay, I saw this happen once before back on moba.
The captain showed up on board laughing said "deck hands were like babys, if they make a mistake and get hurt, thats the last time they'll do it"
Screams from the man hurt my ears and they gave him some pain reliever and eventually he passed out. There was no sleeping for me anymore though, I was already fully awake, so I started talking to the captain. "how much longer untill we reach california?" I asked him.
"about two hours" the captain answered, "what made you want to leave the island?"
"i need a better job so I can support my girlfriend and start a family" I said, "how about you? Do you have a family?"
"i have a wife but she couldn't have kids" he replied.
"im sorry to hear that" I said.
"dont be" he laughed, "she would have been a terrible mother!"
I told him about my life, about my plans for the future and so on and it was good to actually talk to someone about it besides Khali, and my family never would listen to anything I said. In their eyes I was the screw up of the family. And my only friend on the island, Silas Xious, left to go on a nuclear power plant job some months back. Khali was really the only person in my life I had left, and I couldnt help but think I was abandoning her and wanted to go get her and bring her with me. But she knew this is how it had to be, this is the first step of our lives together, and we both just had to cope with it.
A few hours later and we could see the shore, it was california at last. Bits and pieces became clear as we drew nearer, first the dock, then the beach, then the trees, and something else that I couldnt make out yet. But it was the ambulence, the ambulence to pick up the deck hand. When the boat docked, paramedics got the deck hand on the stretcher and me and the captain said our goodbyes. I walked to the street and hailed a taxi and opened the door. I told him to take me to the closest airport and the taxi started on its way.
After about ten minutes I was there, I stepped out and saw the huge building, the taxi driver said that I owed him twenty two eighty six and gave him twenty five and told him to keep the change. I still had another twenty five hundred dollars or so to be used on the trip there and back I had been saving since my junior year in highschool. I called Khali from my cellphone, but she didnt answer. So I had to talk to the machine. "hey Khali, im at the airport, I made it in one piece. The flight im on is about eight or nine hours long so I wont be able to talk to you for a while until I get to san antonio. I love you baby, call me back. Bye" I hung up mad because I hate talking to a voicemail and not getting to hear her sweet voice.
I walked into the airport and got my ticket and after what it seemed like hours of waiting in line for security checks, I was on the plane. This was the first time I had ever been on a plane, I was actually deathly afraid of heights. That's actually one of the reasons I decided to be an airplane mechanic, I decided to face my worst fear. And as the airplane shook, so did I. I kept thinking that this isnt so bad, just go to sleep and ull wake up as you are landing. And about when I closed my eyes the dream started swarming my head.
I was with Khali. We were hugging tight, then some unknown force pulled us apart as her hand slipped out of mine, then I was in the middle of a city, it looked peaceful but something was terribly wrong. The ground started to shake, glass from the builings above me were breaking, without looking up I ran. I ran to the direction of where I saw Khali when she dissapeared. Explosions behind me were going off but I just kept running. I needed Khali. Then everything was still and silent. I looked behind me. Everything was dead. Ruins of the buildings where the once beautiful ones once stood, I turned back around and all of the builings werd the same way, and the streets were filled with blood. I started running again, thats when I saw her. Khali lying on the ground, I kept running to her. I reached her and I woke up.
So many thoughts were going through my head. So many I couldnt focus on one main one. But I cleared my head and thought to myself, its just a dream.
Then a man came on the intercom and said "we are now landing"
"thank god" I mumbled under my breath
