Living with my grandmother has been pure hell for me; she consistently treats me like a child, no matter how many times I try to explain to her that at 18 years of age I’m more than capable of taking care of myself. I’ve been practicing my magic nonstop even though I do not know if I plan to battle. I even emailed the Grand Council leader to see what would happen if we would both forfeit, but I didn’t like the answer; if we both would forfeit my family would be casted into the mortal world forever. I can not bare to make a decision that will affect my entire lineage.
“Trinity!” I hear my grandmother yell.
“Yes?” I say as I walk into the kitchen to meet her
“ Be a dear and grab the rest of the herbs out of the car, we need to practice more today.”
“ Grandmother,” I begin calmly, “ I studied and practiced all day yester-“
“Mother, Trinity needs a break. You cannot expect her to do this everyday. She'll be worn out by the time she gets to the battle,” my mother stated as she was walking in through the door.
My mother was always on my side when it came to my grandmother; she could not stand the thought of her daughter going through what she did because of the same woman. She had even had me attend a mortal school all the way until I graduated last year, she was overjoyed for me. My grandmother, however, refused to have anything to do with it; she didn’t even come to my graduation.
“Christine, if I wanted your opinion I would have asked for it,” my grandmother said turning around.
It was at times like these that I wondered how the hell my mother came from this woman; she must’ve been adopted. My grandmother was a pale woman, her face seemed to have dropped with age (but still managed to be stuck up), she had no sense of style, and she seemed shriveled up. She was smaller, paler, and just all around more of a bitch than my mother was. She had jet black hair that hung straight down to below her bottom and she always wore pant suits (like I said, no sense of style).
My mother however was one of the most attractive women that I had seen. She had fair skin that was complimented by her blonde ringlets that fell like curtains around her face; she had a rounded face with pouty lips and big doe eyes. The more you looked at her the more you could find her resemblance to a porcelain doll, but instead of Victorian dresses she wore skinny jeans, band tees, and Vans all the time. I suppose my mother and I look similar, we always get confused as sisters. I look the same as my mother, except I have blue eyes and brown ringlets. My skin is a shade paler than my mother’s, but not ghastly white like my grandmother; I believe I have a more porcelain skin one. My outfits of choice, however, are very different from my mother; I normally wear fishnet stockings, biker boots, a plaid, purple and black skirt that I pair with an off-the-shoulder black shirt. Mortals call me “emo” or “goth” every time I leave my home, but I’m not. My powers center more around moonlight magic.
In the Magik World, there are different types of beings that can exist; I am considered a 'moonlighter' because my powers are centered around the changing phases of the moon. The brighter and Fuller the moon, the more power I can draw upon; therefore, on the nights of full moons, I can be unstoppable. On the same note, however, when the moon is in first quarter, my magic is almost non-existent. Other beings that they have in the Magik World are goblins (exactly what you would think), gnomes (greedy, short little bastards), moonlighters (me- witches with powers focused on the moon and it’s phases), vampires, necromancers ( dark magic users with a strong concentration in death), and many others. Every creature that you were told was a part of your imagination is probably lurking right under your nose in the Magik World.
Due to the fact that my power is strongly associated with the moon, I have to practice spells that use little power, but have a large effect; I have to study which spells work better for what phase. Both the practice and the studying is going to be very important for the battle because if I use a more powerful spell during a weak phase, the spell could use too much of my energy and kill me; it is also important to understand how to properly cast a spell because spells use too much energy to screw up and repeat.
“Fine whatever, we'll study after dinner,“ my grandmother conceded, snapping me out of my head.
“ Yes, ma’am,” I say as I head to get the herbs out of the car.
As I’m walking toward the car I begin to put my headphones on to block out the noises of my street- neighbors yelling, kids screaming, cars, and my grandmother fighting with my mother. I reach the car and begin to grab the bags out of the car, when suddenly I feel someone tap my shoulder.
“Ah! Fuck!” I turn around, and freeze.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to frighten you! Are you alright?”
“Yes, it’s fine, I’m alright.” No fuck, no I’m not. It’s Lexie, omg, my sister.
“You’re Tritnity, right?” she asked.
“Yes, you’re Lexie?”
“Yeah,” she said looking down, “ look I’m just going to be straight forward; I know you and I were raised very differently, but because I still have to battle, I'm here to ask you if you would help to train me. I know it’s not customary, but I would prefer a fair fight.”
“I would lov-“
“Trinity! Come here!” my grandmother stood at the top of the stairs looking disapprovingly at Lexie.
“Grandmother, I-“
“Save it. Lexie, I think that it’s best if you head home back with your father.”
As my grandmother said this last sentence she waved her had sending my sister back to where she had come from. I walked inside, I couldn’t get the meeting out of my head; my sister knew, but was unprepared. Her being unprepared was one of my biggest fears; could it be fair if I survive against her even though she has never had any training?
“ Grandmother, “ I say turning around, “ I'm scared. What if I can’t bring myself to beat Lexie? She has not training and I don’t think that it’s fair if I have been studying my whole life and she hasn’t.”
“Some people are fated, some people aren’t. You and Lexie are twins, I could have picked either one of you to go to your father, but it wasn’t just random; you are fated to carry the family magic that is why the cards you’ve been dealt are better than Lexie's,” she replied.
“ But Grandmother, it isn’t her faul-“
“Stop. I don’t want to hear it. Go to your room and study; I’ll call you down when dinner is ready.”
I turn around and start towards the stairs, it’s better not to fight with her. As I walk up the stairs, I remember a spell that I had learned a few weeks ago; an astral projection spell; why am I thinking of this now?
I open my door and walk to my bed, and sit down. What was that astral projection spell? Something in Latin, I can’t remember it exactly; I guess I could search it up since I’m supposed to be studying. As I reach for my book bag on the foot of my bed I remember the spell, and then suddenly I was somewhere else.
