Kitsune-
Kitsune are Japanese fox spirits. While the word 'spirit' is used, it in no way means a ghost, but they aren't regular foxes either. The word is used to reflect the state of knowledge and power, as well as their long-lived supernatural state of being. Kitsune is the Japanese word for fox. Foxes are a common subject of Japanese folklore; in English, kitsune refers to them in this context. Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. According to Yōkai folklore, all foxes have the ability to shapeshift into human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others—as foxes in folklore often do—other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives.
Supernatural abilities commonly attributed to the Kitsune include possession, mouths or tails that generate fire or lightning (known as kitsunebi), willful manifestation in the dreams of others, flight, invisibility, and the creation of illusions so elaborate as to be almost indistinguishable from reality. Some tales speak of Kitsune with even greater powers, able to bend time and space, drive people mad, or take fantastic shapes such as a tree of incredible height or a second moon in the sky. Other Kitsune have characteristics reminiscent of vampires or succubi and feed on the life or spirit of human beings, generally through sexual contact.
There are two common types of Kitsune: Myobu/Zenko and Nogitsune.
Myobu/Zenko are known as celestial foxes, sworn to the rice God, Inari's service, and they are sometimes simply called Inari's foxes. They serve as messengers for the gods and help convey information between celestial and human worlds. These benevolent Kitsune bring good luck, provide protection, and ward off evil spirits. They sometimes impart wisdom or guidance to pious humans.
On the other hand, Yako/Nogitsune are known as wild foxes. They are usually tricksters and are capable of evil, usually playing tricks and being up to all sorts of malice or mischief. They play pranks or tricks on humans and can be quite wicked. It is believed that some malevolent foxes feed off the life force of human beings. Though they have an evil nature, these Kitsune keep their word, honor friendships, and repay debts.
Kitsune can have up to nine tails, depending on its age, knowledge, and power. One, five, seven or nine tails are most common in folklore, and when a Kitsune gains its ninth tail, it is said that its fur will become white or gold.
Kitsune can create strange and magical lights in the sky, known as kitsune-bi (Foxfire), which look like they are being carried by invisible marchers. These series of flickering red, orange or blue lights in a long line are similar to a vision of Hawaiian Night Marchers, or the European will-o'-the-wisp.
Kitsune are generally shapeshifters, and they learn to take on a human appearance as they get to around 100 years old. They are believed to possess superior intelligence, long life, and magical powers, but above all, freedom. They do not like being locked away, nor do they like being forced to do something they don't want to and will punish anyone who tries.
Kitsune have star balls, which are small white-gold orbs that are said to be a Kitsune's most prized possession, as they contain the fox's life force. Obtaining a star ball gives the holder the ability to control the Kitsune, but since Kitsune do love their freedom, once they get their star ball back, there would be serious consequences.
