2012 Putnam Valley (A suburb outside of New York City)

Sitting on the torn green bus seat, Charlotte rode towards Carter High School. The school "where dreams are made," The school motto was a joke, what were they kindergardeners, as was the school itself. The teachers of Carter High had the theory that minimal discipline would make children think they were respected and resprect would make teens be more likely to behave. The opposite was true, kids smoked in class, and kissed in the hallways. As Charlotte had learned the hard way, you should never, never go into the rest room during class. It was always occupied by druggies, couples making out, or worse.

Somehow, she and her friends had managed to stay mostly out of trouble, and hadn't fallen into the ways of the average Carter teenager. Thinking of her friends, Charlotte groaned. She had to be the only junior in the whole school who rode the bus to school. Even though she had had a license for over a year, Charlotte still didn't own a car, and she was too embaressed to ask for a ride to school from any of her friends. At Carter, everyone who was anyone drove to school.

The old yellow bus pulled in front of the school. Charlotte was the first to get off, there was no way she was going to be associated with the losers who rode the bus. She walked quickly towards the benches on the north side of the campus, fixing her bookbag as she walked. Megan and Alyssa where already there getting ready for the day.

Megan was putting on makeup, which she wasn't allowed to wear, and Alyssa was reading from one of her sappy romance novels. As Charlotte walked up she heard their one sided conversation and laughed, nothing unusual going on here.

"Jeremy is so cute. I think he totally likes me. Oh Alyssa you should go after his friend Marcus, I hear he totally has the hots for you. Is this too much eye shadow? How does my blush look?" Megan went on and on. Alyssa occasionally nodded or "mm-hum"ed.

Alyssa looked up and saw Charlotte aproaching and smiled, making Megan turn around and squeal. "Charlotte! You look so darling today! Did you do something different to your hair today? Oh here sit down while I fix your eye makeup." Megan was the fashionista and had final say on anything the trio wore, from their shoes to their hair.

"Darling, did you put any eyeliner on at all this morning?" Megan continued her rant. At five foot even, she was also the most talkative, and the flirtiest of the friends. She had a new boy friend at least every other week, to the point Alyssa and Charlotte were suprised she hadn't run out of guys to date yet. As of right now she was single, but by second period things would be different.

Satisfied with her makeup, Megan inspected Charlotte head to toe. Charlotte was dressed comfortably in a v neck shirt with love written across the front, skinny jeans and gray vans. Her long dark hair came to the small of her back and was curled slightly. She thought she had done pretty well for herself. A thought Megan supported when her only comment was about her belt not matching. Megan pulled another belt out of her coco side bag and handed it to Charlotte.

Smiling Charlotte turned to change belts, you could hardly even see the one she was currently wearing. As she pulled up her shirt to do so she caught sight of the small burn scar to the left of her belly button. It was from the night her mother had disapeared, she had been standing too close to her apartment building as it burned. That was the last night she had ever lived in New York City. Her father had desided that it would be better for Charlotte to grow up in a more "kid friendly environment" and had immideately collected the insurance and moved out to Putnam Valley.

Putnam was a town where over half of the adults worked in New York City. It was middle class, with little to do besides make weekend shopping trips to the big apple. There was only one high school, Carter, and everyone rallied around their sports teams. There were chlics of every kind, and for the most part everyone stayed within their small group of friends. Charlotte and her friends weren't the most popular, but everyone knew who they were because they were the smartest girls of the grade. It was well known that Alyssa would be validictorian, Charlotte would be saludictorian and Megan would finish fourth, after Robert Shin. Because the friends knew where they would finish they never fought over grades either, together they helped one another succeed.

Alyssa shut her book, finally at the end of a chapter, and looked up. "Hey Charlotte" she said, "Who is that guy staring at you?"

"What guy" Charlotte asked, turning around.

"Funny. He was just there." Alyssa pointed over by the parking lot. "Over by the silver truck. I've never seen that car before. Maybe he's new."

"Ah well, whatever." Megan interrupted. "I'll meet you guys at english, I'm going to talk to Jeremy. Wish me luck."

Charlotte and Alyssa exchanged knowing looks at Megan skipped off. Then the two of them packed up their stuff and the make up Megan had left sitting on the picnik table and walked towards the main door and their first period classroom. Neither of the friends noticed that the silver truck had parked and its tall driver was now following them into the school.
