In the universe there are four primary realms. Heaven, Earth, the spirit realm and hell. The way you lived your life determines which realm you end up in after death. If you were a kind, loving and caring person in life then you go to Heaven for the afterlife, if you were an evil malevolent person then you go to hell and if you had unfinished business in life and couldn't pass on to one of those two after lives then you became trapped in the spirit realm until you can find your closure. It doesn't matter what you ultimately believed in or what you prayed to, all that matters is that you weren't evil.
