Infinite

Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.

All I heard was my heart. Dull, but fast. Like footsteps leading me into an old memory.

Tap, tap-tap, tap...

Steady trickles of rain came cascading from the roof and beaded down my misty bedroom window while I comfortably sat on the purple beanbag cocooned in a soft quilt.

Autumn had so much beauty to offer while I gazed out at the contrasting shades of tangerine and scarlet against the dim morning sky.

The warm golden sun-rays split up the grey clouds and kissed my skin through the glass.

Knock, knock.

My attention turned to the closed door.

"Hey sleepy head, are you up yet? We have training in case you forgot!"

That deep familiar voice behind the entrance could only belong to one person.

Cedric. A well-presented middle-aged man, who was always up before the crack of dawn, and in bed before sundown.

He had found me in tattered ruins by the freeway one evening on the way back from work and generously invited me into his home, supplying me with the essentials. Safety, home cooked meals, fresh supplies, important information, and a bed for as long as I needed. In return, I would run small errands, and complete house chores.

He was no regular human, but one of the very few I could trust or tolerate for that matter. He had been helping me harness my supernatural abilities, and training me in advanced combat rituals for almost three years now. He was also an advanced alchemist who only used his skill in desperate needs.

"Ah yeah!" I compressed a yawn. "I'll be down real soon Ric."

I stood and stretched, turning and tossing my quilt onto the puffy queen-sized bed. With the sun rising I could see my own reflection on the mirrored wall opposite the window.

Standing in nothing but thin cotton lingerie and sporting untamed raven hair, I made my way to the drawers and pulled out a light blue V-neck with quarter tights. As I dressed in front of the mirror I reached for the brush pausing for a moment to examine the metallic symbol that was permanently branded across my heart in silver.

It resembled an infinity tool with a feather on the upper right and I splash of liquid on the lower left. What was its true meaning? What use could its full power offer?

I finished getting ready, threw my hair up into a pony-tail, wore my Nike's and quickly made my way downstairs to where Cedric had been waiting patiently while sipping on his aromatic ginger tea.

"Everything good is found in ginger," I recalled him explaining to me on the day I first questioned his unique preferences over coffee. "It's a universal medicine. Its natural remedy can resolve almost anything. Stress, appetite, circulation, even help the body absorb nutrients...." He could go on for forever and a lifetime.

"Sorry, I held our time back." I apologized to him.

"OH, that's not a drama at all, you'll just have to make up for it in practice." He handed me a warm apple and cinnamon muffin.

Today he had that look on his face. The one that said I-know-something-you-don't. I shifted and took a keen bite while giving him a skeptical look in return. "MMM!" Delicious. I chewed some more. He was a surprisingly talented cook for somebody who was rarely home.

What are you hiding from me Cedric? I was about to ask before he cut me off.

"Alright, let's go sport!" His wooden chair slid back across the slate tiles as he stood, and made his way to the spotless kitchen to rinse off his dish.
