Once upon a time there was a peasant whose wife died , leaving him with twins - a boy and a girl. For some years the poor man cared for the children as best as he could , but at last he married again. However the twins ' new stepmother was very cruel to them and beat them and half starved them . All day she thought of nothing how she could get rid of them. At last an evil idea came to her , and one morning she said to them :" I am going to send you to visit my granny, who lives in a dear little hut in the wood. You will have to work for her , but she will take good care of you."
So the children left the house . With only a bottle of milk and a piece of ham and a hunk of bread .The little sister, who was wise for her years, said to her brother,"Our stepmother is not sending us to her granny, but to a wicked witch . We must be polite and kind to everyone, and never touch a crumb belonging to anyone else. Then who knows someone might help us ." And they struck out in the gloomy wood.
Eventually, the children saw in the thickest of the trees a little hut . Nervously they peeped inside- and there lay a witch, they entered the hut he with asked them why did they came they said that they were sent by their stepmother to serve her.
The witch said "See that you do well, then" growled the witch.
"If I am pleased with you I will reward you, but if I am not, I will cook you in the oven!"
The witch told the girl to sit down then she would spin the yarn, and she gave the boy a sieve in which to carry water from the well, the witch went in the woods.
The girl started crying because she could not spin. But suddenly hundreds of rats came out from every hole of the hut they came out pattering , squeaking and saying:
"Little girl why are you crying?
If you want some help give us some bread."
The girl gave them some of her bread. Then the rats told her that if she Ve the cat the ham , it would show her the way out of the wood, and the rats will spin the yarn for her. The girl started looking for the cat, and as she was looking for the cat she saw her brother in danger because he could not carry water from the sieve it came pouring out fast as he put in it.
As he was trying to comfort his brother she heard rustling of wings and a flight of wrens Telling them to give them some crumbs if they do they will find water that will stay in the sieve.
The twins gave the wrens their bread when the wrens had finished eating they told the boy to fill the sieve with clay . The boy did what he was told and he carried the sieve with water into hut without spilling a single drop.
When they entered the hut the cat was curled up on the floor they fed her with ham and they asked her how to get away from the witch. The cat thanked them for the ham and gave them a pocket- handkerchief and a comb the cat told them what to do when the cat finished speaking the witch returned.
The witch told them that they have done well for today and tomorrow they will be something difficult to do. The children were afraid when the witch went they took the handkerchief and the comb and they started running they saw the witch dog the threw the remaining of their bread and he ate it . Then thy were hindered by the birch trees the little sister tied the twigs with her hair ribbon and they got safely. When the witch returned she saw that the children were missing she told the why did she let the children go the cat said that the children gave the cat a ham the witch was furious, she went to the dogs she asked the dog why did they let the children go ,the dog Sid that the children gave him a piece of bread the witch went to the birch trees and asked them the same thing they said that the children gave him a ribbon.
The with went after the twins the twins threw the handkerchief instantly a deep river flowed behind them the witch still followed them the twins threw the comb down on the ground a dense forest sprang up,in which the branches were so close that the witch could not pass she return back to her hut tearing her hair with rage.
