Chapter 4 ~ Confessions

I got up feeling sore. The bruises were still there but they barely showed now. Going straight to the bathroom, I washed my face. I was paler than usual and my eyes were still the dull brown it had been after mother…

Remembering to thank Mr. Smith, I headed to the kitchen after slipping on my jumper and sweatpants. Yes, I put them there just incase Collin was still in my room, which he was.

Walking into the kitchen, I saw Mr. Smith and Alyssa talking. Alyssa was beautiful when she smiled. Aside from all the fake and mean, I knew she had a heart, no matter how black and cold it was. Mr. Smith looked at me and gave me a warm smile. My heart skipped a beat. It was the first smile I’d ever gotten. I only knew him for two days and I liked him. Not in that way! Shame on you anonymous!

The next thing that happened shocked me and apparently, it shocked Alyssa too. Mr. Smith came up to me and… hugged me. I got my first hug AND smile ever. He smelled like pine trees. He was way taller than me so my head reached his chest. His big, burly hands tightened around me. Feeling overwhelmed, I  hugged him just as strong.

He let go, to my dismay, and held me at arms length. “Good morning!” Then lowering his voice he said, “How are you feeling? You look sick. Is it... you know... that time of month?” I saw a twinkle in his eye and couldn't help but smile. Wow, today was the day of miracles. I chuckled and shook my head, “I’m fine, but are you sure it's not that time of month for you? You seem awfully happy today." He playfully glared. I broke off the conversation and asked him if I could speak to him in private. He agreed, curiosity obviously taking over.  My eyes darted over to Alyssa and back to his. He got the message and led me out.

“Yes?” He asked. I wasn't stupid. I couldn't just come out and ask him if he brought me the blanket. So instead tried to indirectly get an answer from him without his knowledge of it. " I was just concerned if you were comfortable sleeping yesterday. I heard that the heaters stopped working." He looked at me and blushed. “I slept like a baby. Anyways, I was just too exhausted to even get up and wear something thicker. How about you?” I couldn't help but remember how warm the blanket had been yesterday. " I slept perfectly fine. You get used to the cold around here. Anyways, I’ve got to head to school early. My English teacher suspects that I haven't been studying enough and she wants to talk to me." His eyes showed many different emotions. Curiosity there, hinting that he wasn't easy to fool. "Ok but if you need any help at all, call me." With that, he winked at me and headed back into the kitchen. Well, today was going to be a good day.

I might have been mistaken about that last thought. I dozed off in the janitor's closet for about and hour before school started. Yes, Jeff the janitor was used to me staying there that he even brought me a tiny bed to sleep on. He was kind of like a father figure for me. Not the point here. So, I was peacefully sleeping when an idiot decided to bug me by barging in like the freakin King Kong. And not only that, but Man Kong over here happened to be Sir Collin of Dirt Bag City. What? Don't blame me, I was enjoying the sleep.

I glared at him with every fiber of my being. He crossed the line. Oh yeah, I just drew it there. I picked up a broom and aimed it at his face but he quickly backed up. Amusement and wonder filled his face. The idiot just made me angrier. I took the broom and held it to his neck as if it was a real sword. "Why are you in here?" I asked it. Yes, I dare say it. He answered with a witty comment as usual. " More like, what are you doing here?" His eyes trailed from my sword, to my face, then to the bed behind me. Horror flashed his face and I turned around, stupidly believing that the boogey man was there. I was shoved on the bed face first and i felt Collin hold me into it. Turning my face to the left, I could still see the look of horror there. "What the… Collin? I know I don't have a really nice morning face but come on! It can't be that bad!" I sarcastically remarked. Collin answered back and what he said made me want to vomit. " You're sleeping with... the janitor?! Ew Beth! I can't believe he'd actually want to sleep with you!"

I wasn't hurt by his comment since i knew that it was a habit between us to insult each other, being mortal enemies for eternity and all that jazz. Seriously appalled by the idea, I quickly answered him. “You idiot! I happen to rest here sometimes and Jeff and I are friends. But wait… You were jealous! Of course! How could I miss it for so long!” He looked confused and his grip loosened. I took my chance and pushed back. He fell on his back. I got up as fast as I could and got my broom. He got up and raised both hands at the sight of my epic sword/broom. “ What are you saying? And on a side note. Might I say, that broom really matches your witch costume.” He laughed at his own joke. Please call the Looney Hospital and tell them that we’ve got an emergency.

“Haha. Funny. Back to the real problem… Collin, I’ve finally figured out why you’ve been picking on me all those years.” I let out a dramatic sigh and he seemed kind of skittish. “You can come outside of the closet now. Show your true colors. I now know that you’re g-“ His glare took me by surprise. “Say it and you’ll regret the day you were born.” I internally laughed. That already has a check next to it on my list. What’s the worst that could happen? “Gay.”
