I guess you could say I'm actually doing this. I mean it's exactly what I desire. Hesitantly pressing the buttons placed on the panel, knowing what all them do, the engine roars to life. I held on tight, with every strength I had as the clock ticked. I was going to prove them wrong. Every single one of them.
Beginning the explanation of my dream is rather confusing; I'm not sure how it even began. My calculations are set to believe that it all started when I was your 'average' 8 year old. I was always obsessed with dolls, always asked for dress up clothes and girly things. The typical girly girl that we are expected to be. Unfortunately it was all replaced by a simple spaceship.
My parents accidentally handed me a gift that was meant to be for my brother on Christmas Day. They mistakenly added the wrong name on the tag. It made me very embarrassed. I thought it was absolutely ridiculous at first because it was a 'boy's toy' but however, I didn't expect to find myself flying it around the room making silly space noises while giggling and snickering as I counted down from 10 to 1.
It was then when I decided what i wanted to be when the question was asked at the age of 10. With the help of the spaceship toy, I replied with,
"I want to be an astronaut."
My dream is still achieving today. I work with NASA, as it includes one of my other dreams. I've been planning for awhile with my team on how to fly to the moon, also building the exact same spaceship I was given 21 years ago.
Unfortunately I'm constantly been told, by my boss, that,
"Flying to the moon is a man's job, Amelia. I don't think any woman have the strength to achieve the dream. But good luck though."
Every time I would hear that, it made me want to prove my ability more and more. I was tired of his sexist comments. I was tired of how everything out there is labelled as a 'man's job'. When are woman going to be treated equally with careers?
I was ready to fly out, my spaceship was completed and I couldn't be any more happier with it. Half of me was excited, but the other half was petrified. I mean, what if I don't make it back? What if my spaceship crashes or blows up?
I shook the unenthusiastic thoughts out of my mind and concentrated on what was going to happen. I switch the engine on and push the buttons that were needed. I could see my boss standing nearby, tapping his foot angrily as I grinned at him.
My clammy hands grabbed the handles beside my chair as I started to count down.
Each second made my heart rate increase rapidly that, for a split second, I thought it was actually going to burst out of my chest.
I inhaled a deep breathe before jerking the handle towards me as the spaceship began to lift.
This was it.
