It was a quiet day in the usually over populated 50's themed diner. There wasn't any excitement; the only thing Angie anticipated when coming to work on a Saturday. As a waitress at a family oriented restaurant, Angie was always looking forward to something that would be the highlight of her day and most of the time, it was the sound of children's laughter filling the air. It reminded her of what she had before she abandoned it all those years ago.
But not today. No, today was as uninteresting as a Saturday could get. The lack of events had Angie scrolling through her contacts depicting who to delete and who to keep. It was then that she realized she really needed a life. She used to have one but left it behind and she refused to go back to it. No matter how many times one of her old friends pleaded for her to do so and no matter how much she secretly did want to, she didn't. She was just too stubborn for her own good; a trait she passed down to her daughter.
Once she got to a certain name in the 'T' category, her heart clenched. There was only one name that could do this to her.
Tristan.
Yes, even after all these years, Ang was still hopelessly in love with her semi ex- husband. They'd never gone through the whole legal process but they were through, legal or not. It pained Angie deeply to know that she was the sole cause of their fallout but she could never admit that to anyone. Why? Because she was still trying to convince herself that she was over him. But if that was the case, why was his number still in her phone after five years?
With a sigh, she continued to go through her contacts, still not deleting the number. Suddenly, the screen went black and a picture of one of her friends showed up along with the option to accept the call or decline. It was Vincent. He had been a very good friend of Angie's and she missed him the most when she left. Well, he was one of the people she missed most. She hadn't spoken to him in a while though, even though he usually checked up on her frequently.
She decided to answer, seeing as she had absolutely nothing better to do.
"I was beginning to think you forgot about me." She said firstly. There was a dry chuckle at the other end of the line.
"I think that's my line." Vince responded. Truly, it was. Seemingly, Angie had forgotten about everyone. She hadn't had contact with anyone from home, with the exception if Vince and her parents and sister, in almost a year and those that really did matter to her hadn't spoken to her since she'd left.
Tristan had come to beg her to come back a few months after she left but back then, she was a selfish child who didn't give anything about anyone but herself. She hadn't seen him since.
"Sorry about that. I've just been very... busy, you know. Getting my life back together and all." She admitted quietly. Vince knew exactly what she was talking about and they both preferred to keep that in the dark. Nobody like to talk about those days. They only brought back painful memories of a time that wasn't the best in Angie's life. They were in the past now and they liked to keep it that way.
There was a moment of silence at the mention of those times, both of the conversation participants dwelling on the past events of Angie's life. All the mistakes that she made and all the pain she'd caused. It was enough to make anyone cry. Vincent cleared his throat.
"Listen, I know I haven't spoken to you in a while and I know that you probably haven't spoken to your family in a really long time but I just thought that maybe you would want to know about this."
"Is there something wrong with them?" There was a slight panic in Angie's voice. Just the mere implication of anything happening to anyone that she cared about was enough to give her a heart attack. Vince was quick to reassure her that nothing was wrong.
