Me: stfu i love it

Mark 🐶: I didn't say it wasn't
It's cute

Me: damn straight

Our mom came home from work in the middle of us putting together the little tree. She watched us and told us it looked pretty but never got too close. Never did a thing to help. In the end I didn't really care though because it was beautiful and it was something we did on our own. I was proud of my brother and I. Proud that we even managed to find it in the storage closet, or were able to untangle the lights and made it look normal even though the string of lights was too long for the length of the tree.

It also took us longer than it should've because midway through putting it up we got distracted by the tv and then by a random cookie recipe that I found online and we tried to bake. They came out way too sweet and a little hard but they tasted amazing to us because we had put so much work into them.

By the time we had finished it was growing dark even though only around 5:00 because winter likes to fuck with your head.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was about ready to go back into my room, when my phone buzzed again. I smiled, taking the phone out of my pocket once again. The smile fell when I saw that it was Riley.

Riley: do you want to hang out?
Sry i didn't answer earlier

My heart pounded and my hands grew clammy. It was late at night and I wondered if it would be just the two of us. I started to calm down when the realization that it probably wouldn't be just the two of us anyway. It was never just the two of us.

Me: right now?
Where?

There was a pause.

Riley: I'll be there in 5

Uh, okay? It was really sudden and he hadn't even asked if it was okay. I hurried to my room and pulled on a red turtleneck sweater and jeans, brushed my hair into a high ponytail, and put in some nicer earrings. Then I took off my glasses and painstakingly put in my contacts while feeling jittery from nervousness, and the fear that he'd show up while I was still getting ready.

I brushed my teeth too, because my breath smelled bad and I wanted to be ready just in case. Not that I was suggesting or expecting anything to happen, but just in case anything did happen. Y'know...

I anxiously waited on the couch by the front window. I fiddled with the purse I was wearing and picked off loose fuzz that lingered on the sweater.
