"BEEP BEEP BEEP!!!" A familiar voice blares, waking me up every morning. I groan and fidget with the bed sheets under the duvet, debating whether I should get up or not."C'mon, Kendra, stop being such a lazyhead," the voice says in annoyance.
Of course, there's only one person who would say that to me every day. Can I guess who it is? Probably not—it's my twin sister, Kara. Ever since our seventh birthday, Kara came up with this "amazing" plan to wake me up using her own alarm clock... aka herself.
She'd always call me a lazyhead or doofus if I didn't get up.
Sometimes, if she kept bothering me, I'd raise my middle finger slowly. Eventually, she'd walk away in surrender. But today, one of my eyes suddenly jerked open and locked onto Kara. I sighed, quickly sat up, and watched her jump up in victory.
I got out of bed and started getting dressed. "What are you going to do today?" Kara asked as I put on the leather jacket my dad gave me when I was sixteen.
"Where are you going?" she asked as I ran down the stairs and grabbed an apple from the kitchen counter.
"To the barn," I said, smiling, already knowing her response.
"You are just like Dad," she muttered.
I laughed even harder. "You're right," I agreed, walking through the yard toward the barn.
"Kendra!" I heard my dad yell. I quickened my pace and swung open the barn door. The familiar sight of metal hanging from the roof and dad's scattered supplies greeted me.
I walked past a couple of tools. "Dad, where are you?" I called out. He popped out from under a car, smiling. I stepped aside as he stood up, brushing himself off, and went back to the table with his sketches and new ideas.
I pulled out one of my drawings, and Dad eyed it as I pinned it up. "I thought of it last night," I said, explaining. "Maybe we could do this sometime." It was a necklace with a metal star on it.
Dad smiled and nodded. "What time are you leaving to pick up the new truck?" I asked, grabbing a knife to start working on the necklace.
"Today at three," he replied. I felt excitement bubble up. "Really?"
"Yes, you can finally help me fix up something," he joked.
I smiled and playfully pushed him. "You know I will."
Just then, Dad turned to look at someone pulling up. Lucas came walking up.
"Are you ready?" Lucas asked Dad.
"Let's go," Dad replied, then Lucas looked at me with a cheesy grin spreading across his face.
"Hey, Ken," he flirted.
I rolled my eyes and went back to working on the necklace.
"Come on!" Dad called to Lucas. He winked at me before walking away, and I smiled with relief.
"See you later, Dad!" I yelled.
He waved from Lucas's car, and they took off. Man, this was going to be one of the best days of my life, I thought.
