Darkness

The teeth,

puncturing her skin, her heart.

She opened her mouth to scream

the pain was agonizing .

no sound emerged

The teeth pierced her brain, destroyed her thoughts.

But the mask  she wore, the bright, shiny mask

it hid those dark thoughts from everyone.

the bites never hurt as badly as the fire they spit.

The fire that left burns

Burns that left scars

No matter how bad  they were,

no matter how much they stung the burns always left scars.

Some were large and some were small.

Some were minor some immense.

The burns and their scars were never  visible for long though

The light made sure of that.

Always there to heal and help her.

Draped in white, with eyes like a child

and a mind like an elder.

The light made her feel safe,

feel like she belonged somewhere.

The light had secrets too.

it carried the world on its shoulders,

growing dimmer and dimmer.

Until it stopped glowing all together.

A candle blown out in the wind,

a fire finally fought out,

a baby bird crushed by the jaws of a tabby.

Slowly, painfully, until there was nothing left.

Only darkness.
