Missing Pieces

The Talk

A/N: This one shot is best if you've read Comfortable or Haunted. Previously posted on JBFF+ as a bonus chapter for Haunted.

"It goes WHERE?" Maddox looked like he might pass out.

Justin bit his tongue, wishing he'd thought to record the conversation. Earlier that day they'd gone to visit his brother Jaxon and his wife. They'd just had a new baby, a little girl, and Kylie was so excited she begged him and Clara to have another baby so she could have a little sister.

Maddox was not as impressed by the tiny baby and said he would rather have a dog. Justin, on the other hand, had always figured he and Clara would have more kids. What he hadn't figured was that Maddox had no idea where babies came from. And since Clara was on tour, that left him with the task of explaining.

"Inside-" Justin started to repeat the explanation but Maddox cut him off.

"No," Maddox shook his head. "That's not true."

"What?" Justin almost laughed. "Why would I make that up, kiddo?"

"You make things up all the time," Maddox insisted.

"Dax, I promise," Justin knew Maddox was right. He did have a little too much fun joking around with his son. For someone as sensitive as Maddox was, Justin knew he should be more careful.

"Why would anyone do that?" Maddox crossed his arms. "Mama would never let you do that."

"Well, you and Kylie got here somehow," Justin had to steer the conversation away from what he and Clara did or didn't do. Maddox definitely couldn't handle thinking about his parents that way.

"I know, but you couldn't have gotten your, um, penis," Maddox turned bright red. "In her. You wouldn't do that."

"Okay, try not to think about it that way," Justin took a deep breath. Why had he thought he could handle this talk? Why hadn't he waited until they went to see Clara?

"But you wouldn't," Maddox insisted. "It would hurt her."

"In a good way," Justin answered before he could stop himself. "I mean, no, it doesn't hurt. Not like you're thinking. Just-"

"Daddy," Maddox's eyes were so wide Justin once again wished he'd waited to let Clara handle this. "How could I not know this? You're lying."

"I'm not lying," Justin said. "But I think maybe we're not on the same page."

"I would know," Maddox said. "It would be messy."

"It can be," Justin admitted, "But-"

"No!" Maddox almost screamed.

"It's not as messy as you think though," Justin insisted. "I promise."

"How could you do that?" Maddox demanded. "You would never hurt her like that, I know you wouldn't. Stop messing with me!"

"Dax, I promise, I am telling you the truth," Justin wanted to hug him but he wasn't sure if that would make things worse. Could you hug your son while you were giving him The Talk?

"How?" Maddox repeated. "How could you do it? Do you use a knife?"

"A knife?" Justin couldn't control his reaction to that one. "What the fuck? No, Maddox, why would you even ask that?"

"Then how do you get it in there?" Maddox was still bright red but he was furious and as close to shouting as the quiet little boy ever got.

"I - uh," Justin shook his head. "It slides in, Dax."

"How?" Maddox asked again. He reached forward and poked Justin in the stomach. "That didn't slide in."

"Well I don't have a hole there," Justin pointed out.
