A/N: I decided not to write GuGu or GusLey for the meantime because... reasons. Lmao. Skip that. I also published this one on my other account and pasted it here so this book won't feel so empty. ;)

(Layla)

"I think," my mother said, tipping her glass with wine towards my Auntie's direction, "it is a sin."

Auntie raised her glass as well, a small 'ting' sound resonated in the room as they toast. On mornings after she'd been here, I'd take a wineglass and suck on the rim, sipping on the imaginary scotch inside it while pretending that I was curly-haired and skinny and gorgeous just like her.

Her browny gold curls bounced as she shook her head. "The risk was too great."

"What kind of life could that be? They should have been separated at birth." My mother replied, she sounded angry for a second.

At this point, I knew they were talking about Alpha and Beta again, the twin from the neighborhood. School had been in session when those boys came in town. Both of them sat in a wheelchair, sat so close, they looked like hugging each other and that was the first time I saw a conjoined twin. They were connected at the chest and from what I heard, one heart kept the blood circulating through both bodies, and it was mostly inside Beta. Which was a shame, because Beta was the dim one, sweet and always smiling but he never says a word. Only few groans or incomprehensible sounds other than movements of the hands.

Alpha on the otherhand is bright, active and loud. Though both of them were chocolate brown, Alpha's teeth are the whitest I've ever seen.

"Who would have got the heart?" Auntie asked, my curiosity was piqued again.

"That's why their parents should have done it then." Mum answered, "Before he and his wife got attached to them."

"Right, but I heard they came here to consult with Doctor Baker. They might find a solution to the problem even if it's dangerous." Auntie nodded, her curls bounces again and I watched them solemnly. "What if it had been Layla and Kimmy? And you had to choose one or the other?"

My mother didn't answer or maybe I didn't get to hear it as I quietly left my hiding place. Or it could be that I didn't want to know. After tiptoeing my way to my room, I lay back on my pillow and stared into the dark. My head felt funny; I felt like Beta. I imagined my sister, Kimmy, beside me, stuck to my chest and breathing asthmatically into my face. I imagined Doctor Baker standing beside us, a carving knife raised over his head.

Lab1718 is a famous institute in the city, few miles away from town. Dr Baker recommended Alpha and Beta to be sent there cause when he examined them, he detected a second heartbeat, faint but distinct. It was a curious and interesting case so he guaranteed that they will be treated free of charge.

The big-city specialists and sophisticated equipments can actually help the twin so their parents agreed to this. Alpha and Beta are happy as well.

On recess time as I sat quietly, eating my food, Alpha tapped on the table. He always wanted to sit beside me eversince they came into our class.

"Hi Layla." He smiles and I looked at his face. I like the combination of his colored skin and his white teeth.

"Hi Alpha." I smiled back, up close I could see that his eyelashes are actually curly.

"Before, I wasn't very sure. But now that Doctor Baker confirmed that I have my own heart, I can tell that it's really mine that's beating strong whenever I see you." He leaned closer and so does Beta. I just blinked, confused as to what he's trying to say.
