It was finally morning and I opened my eyes hazily as the sun glared through my eyelids. There's a test in math, project due in physics and an analysis in AP World History. My daily schedule passed through my mind as I spotted a figure lying on my bed. Mikana. I smiled, getting up from the couch and walked over to the side of the bed. Remembering the time she snapped photos of me when I fell asleep on the park bench, I took my phone from its charger and snapped a few pictures. What goes around, comes around. I smiled deviously as I checked the pictures I snapped and swooned; making sure no one was around to see, of course.
"Mikana.." I whispered, a few centimeters from her ear, "Mikana.." All I got in return was a few adorable grumbles as she reached her arm out, finding a pillow to only shove it on her face. Aww, a few more pictures won't hurt. But what's wrong with me? This is plainly creepy, but I couldn't resist.
"It's time to wake up, Mikana." I murmured, just loud enough for her to hear, "You're going to be late for school."
"Mhm, school," she repeated absentmindedly, "Oh! School!" With that, she shot up like a high powered spring and hit her forehead against mine.
"Owh," we both mumbled as we held our foreheads, trying to get the pain to fade.
"Akashi!" Mikana yelled with utter surprise.
"Yeah, it's me," I chuckled as my fingers left my forehead, tolerating the mild pain.
"But what are you doing in my home?" her face was still in a daze.
"Is it your home? I mean you're staying with me but it's my room, Mikana."
After yesterday, I decided that it would be best for her to stay with me, at my house, since it was way too dangerous for her to stay at her own home. Everything seemed to click back into her memory as she scrambled off the bed and back onto her feet.
"No, no, no.." she repeated over and over.
"I'm sorry for being such a bother! I won't come back again!" her widened eyes darted throughout the entire room, looking for her belongings as she gathered them and hurried out the door. To say I was confused was an understatement. I was shocked. What could she possibly be sorry for? She's done nothing wrong. I ran after her, finally managing to gently grab her arm and spin her around to face me.
"And what are you sorry for?"
"...." She couldn't even look me in the eye. After the deafening silence, she finally spoke up.
"I have to get to school," Mikana whispered as she attempted to run off. Oh no you don't.
"Do you really think you could go to school with a bruise like that on your face?" I know I shouldn't have brought it up since one, it makes my blood boil, knowing someone did that to her, and two, behind it would most likely be a sensitive subject. Although breaching the topic was a risk, it was worth it as she melted into my arms, quietly. I held her for all she's worth and didn't dare let go.
"It's okay, Mikana. I'm not going to hurt you." I murmured softly into her ear, "I promise."
"I'm sorry," she couldn't stop apologizing. Who hurt her, who broke her?
"There's someone out there, someone who hurt you, someone who broke you, but I would never hurt you," I held her chin gently, as if she was made of fragile china, and lifted her face up to have her eyes, her dull golden eyes, meet my own, "I'll protect you. I'll protect you from this day forward and no one's ever going to hurt you ever again. I swear on my life that I'll protect you. Good morning sweetheart, the sun's out and you're walking down rainbow road." I didn't know what possessed me to say such things but somehow, I knew I wouldn't face a single regret because through those dull eyes of her, I could've sworn I saw a spark. Maybe it isn't so bad having someone to protect.
