On January 17, 2008, a Boeing 777 "Triple Seven"-300 with callsign "Speedbird 38", powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 892 Turbofan engines, took of at Beijing Capital International Airport and was supposed to land at London Heathrow International Airport the very same day. On board, there were 136 passengers in addition to 16 crew members, which made a total of 152 people.
The Captain of the flight was highly experienced Peter "Pete" Burkill, assisted by Senior First Officer John Coward and First Officer Conor Magenis. The cabin crew was directed by Sharon Eaton-Mercer.

Since the first delivery of a Boing 777 back in 1995, there have occurred only 18 accidents involving this type of aircraft. Only 7 of them were a hull-loss, the London Heathrow incident being the very first of them. Even today the Boing 777 is considered one of the safest and reliable aircraft in aviation history.
