Several thousand miles away from Pallet Town, in the Santalune Forest, a blue frog Pokemon and a masked, hawklike bird were hiding out in a hollow tree, trying to avoid being spotted by any other Pokemon. Their names were Froakie and Hawlucha, and as for the reason for their hiding...well, the full story would take too long to tell. To cut a long story short, Hawlucha had found Froakie living in the wild after the younger Pokemon had been abandoned by his family. Usually Froakie, who were the water-type starters for the Kalos region, were born and raised in a breeding center until they reached the required level to be handed over to beginning trainers. This Froakie, however, was a different story. Born of a rape, he had been cast aside first by his mother, who wanted nothing to do with what she deemed as a reminder of her pain, then later by the other Froakie, who were afraid that the circumstances of his birth would turn him into a demon, so to speak. When Froakie was only a week old, the other Froakie had attacked him and nearly beaten him to the point of death before dragging his unconscious body outside and dumping him in the forest for the Fletchling and Pidgey to pick away at. Froakie was quite certain that had Hawlucha not happened to come by fifteen minutes later, he would have died.
Ever since that day, Froakie and Hawlucha had been living on the run. It wasn't because they couldn't find a decent place to live permanently-on the contrary, both Pokemon were quite good at adapting to their surroundings, and as such could have made a home almost anywhere. No, the reason they needed to stay on the move was because friendships between starter and wild Pokemon were, to put it lightly, heavily frowned upon. Most starter Pokemon viewed wild Pokemon as barbaric and cruel, while wild Pokemon viewed their starter counterparts as pampered, weak, and no match for the real world. It was unclear when exactly these sentiments had begun, but they were a universally accepted truth now. If any other Pokemon had seen Froakie and Hawlucha together, they would have been killed on the spot.
"You know, we can't keep living like this," Froakie said to Hawlucha. "There are wild Pokemon everywhere, you know. At this point, it's only a matter of time until someone finds out about us."
As if to prove his point, at that moment a flock of Pidgey flew overhead. Froakie immediately ducked farther back into the tree, his muscles tense.
"I know," Hawlucha admitted. "But where do you suggest we go?"
The little frog considered the question for a moment. Though two years his senior, Hawlucha often turned to Froakie for advice since he was the more levelheaded of the two. But right now, he couldn't seem to decide what the best option for them would be.
"Well, we could try traveling to another region," he said finally. "Problem is, then we'd attract even more attention since neither of us are very common in other regions. Actually, I think your species is found in the Alola region, but I'm not sure."
"You'd have more of a problem than me, since wild Pokemon are known to migrate to other regions, especially flying-types," Hawlucha pointed out. "But a starter Pokemon moving to another region, and without a trainer? I don't think I've ever heard of that happening."
"I don't know what to suggest," Froakie admitted. "Do you have any ideas?"
Hawlucha bit his lip and looked down, absentmindedly running a talon over Froakie's head. He loved the little Bubble Frog Pokemon and wanted nothing more than to protect him. But what could he do? Every option they seemed to have would only put Froakie in danger. And himself too, he supposed, but Hawlucha was less concerned about his own safety. If it came down to it, he was fairly certain that he was experienced enough to beat a few of his wild counterparts. But Froakie was too young. He wouldn't last five minutes in a real fight.
Then Froakie spoke up again. "What if we found a trainer?" he suggested. "Then we'd be safe. No one questions wild and starter Pokemon living together if they're with a trainer."
"That....might actually work," Hawlucha agreed.
Froakie smiled. "All right, then. Tomorrow, we're going to find a trainer to take us in."
Froakie and Hawlucha were ready to give up their lives too.
