Jonas POV

I watch as she walks out the door, knowing I just made the biggest mistake of my life.  I told her to leave, telling her to get out. I needed her to leave, not only for my sake but for her safety. My urges where stronger than ever and I didn’t want to hurt her. I couldn’t just ask her to leave, she wouldn’t. She’d just look at me and smile that irresistible smile and say ‘We’ll get through this together’. I couldn’t risk it, not this time. She is my life, without her I can’t breathe but I have to do this. Lissa is my soulmate. I can practically see the silver chord connecting us as she runs out to her carriage. She was just a prince’s daughter who fell in love with a poor farmer.

She turns around one last time, “I hate you! I don’t care if we are soulmates! I will never love you!” And with that, she slammed the door of her carriage and rushed away. Ouch… But she will never understand. I’m Jonas, as a shapeshifter I eat flesh. Usually I can easily eat some kind of animal (usually deer) and I’m fine. What she doesn’t know is that I was bitten a few days ago by a starving vampire. The poison is taking longer to settle in because I’m a shapeshifter, usually things like this don’t happen. I’m not sure what happened to the vampire but usually when a shapeshifter gets bitten they die. But first, they usually go on a blood thirsty rage then they die. I can’t put Lissa through that and it would make me a danger to her. I never want her to see me as a monster. For the last few days I was a complete jerk, half because of the changes inside of me, half because I knew I needed to find a way for her to want to leave me. I need to kill myself, before I run after her.

---------------------------

I look down to the river. At this point I’m standing on a bridge with a boulder tied around my waist. I’m near my house so just in case Lissa ever comes back she will find me dead and go on with her life. I close my eyes and jump.

-------------------------

I woke up in my childhood bed. My mother was pouring cool water on a cloth and dabbing my head. I tried to sit up. “Don’t sit up, I know what you were trying to do. You were passed out for at least a few days before we found you on the side of the river with a scarf in your hand and a mangled rope in the other.” She got up and motioned me to stay down. She left to go grab something and came back with a yellow and blue printed scarf with splotches of blood on it.

“Do you recognize this?” she asked. I didn’t recognize the pattern so I brought my head up to sniff it. I nearly jumped out of my bed.

“THAT’S LISSA’S!” I yelled. My mother gently but, using her strength, guided me back to my bed so I was lying down again.

“It’s going to be alright, I’m sure she’s fine.” As my mother said this I tried to convince myself the same but I couldn’t feel the person on the other side of my chord. I just felt… empty. What have I done??
