Ariel used to gesture wildly when she spoke.
First, it was a wave of her hand and then it was a noisy exhale from her nose, followed by an exasperated eyeroll when she didn't find the right words to say. Sometimes, she would run her fingers through her messy brunette ombre hair and wince when she tugged at a knot.
I always thought it was an angry habit more than anything.
"I'm telling you, E," she said as she turned to open her locker, huffing when her books tumbled to the floor. "That Fletcher guy has a total crush on you."
I snorted.
Fletcher Bradley was our school's star quarterback. He was sweet enough, obviously admired by many but he seemed to lack a lot of there there. His dad was the football coach, so he had benefits there, but in the education department? Not so much.
"Yeah, because being frustrated with Calculus homework and asking me for help is totally being into me," I said sarcastically, fingers picking at a string of lint on my cardigan.
She shot me a look. "Just saying. You should ask him out." She shrugged her shoulders and closed her locker door, turning toward me as she bent to pick her fallen textbooks.
Ariel was always trying to play matchmaker. She swore that, if that was a real career, she would take it up in a heartbeat. And as always, I was never really interested in being set up or anything of the sort.
I was never really good at confrontation, or even knowing how to speak to guys without making a huge dumbass out of myself. It just wasn't ideal, and definitely not my thing. Ariel was way better than me in that department.
Pulling my backpack higher on my shoulder, a small huff left my lips. "I don't know," I answered, following her gaze when she turned her head. "What?"
I tried to stand on my tiptoes to catch a glimpse of what she was seeing, but I couldn't see very well. But sure enough, I finally saw what she was eyeing.
