I live in Tennessee.
Tennessee probably has the most lame claims to fame known to man; with our New York wannabe capital, the tired title of "Volunteer State", and anything but remarkable suburbs, we make it work as charmingly average. People usually do not move here unless they have a strange fascination with country music, and a vague idea that they can sing. For most people, we are a "Where are you from?" state, not a "I want to go to" state. Adults disagree, though, and talk about the heights in traffic, tourists, and new neighbors. I think it feels the same as it ever was. Others that move here are either in college, or thought it a good place to settle down. The second group of people aren't wrong, it is a nice place to start a family, complete with littered schools across each county like little pepper particles, and the same mean kids from across the USA. It's the same as anywhere else, I'd like to think.
