Today is Harry’s birthday, so I decided to surprise him by cooking dinner for us. It’s always him that cooks, so I thought it would be nice if I would tonight, especially since it’s a special occasion. I prepared noodles, with different coloured peppers and hot sauce. I also brought out the best wine we had. I set up the table, knowing he should be home from work as a police officer any minute now. I sat down, and started to wait for him to walk through the door.

I didn’t like the fact that he was a cop, but it was his dream so I had to deal with it. I just found it unsafe, and I always worried about him when he left for work. What if he gets shot by some next crazy criminal or gets into an accident while on a chase? He’s been in this profession for 3 years now, but that doesn’t mean nothing can happen. There are stories of officers getting killed days before their retirement. He’s never safe, but I try to stay positive and keep those kinds of negative thoughts out. You’re never safe if you think about it.

I sit and wait. Minutes started passing by, and the food I worked so hard on started to get cold. As more time started to go by I started to get irritated and worried. He was supposed to be here 55 minutes ago. Maybe he got held back at work or he’s out celebrating with his friends. He would have called though. He could have just forgotten, I thought to myself.

When an hour pasted I called his close friend Niall, and asked if he knew where he was. Unfortunately, he did not. I called a few more of his friends. They all had no clue where he was. I walked up to the window and looked out the window, staring at the half empty drive way, hoping that Harry’s black Mercedes will fill up the space. The moon was all the way up, and there was still no sign of him.

I looked at the clock. It said that it was 11:32pm. My mind was going through the darkest scenario. Then suddenly the phone rings, I run and answer it hoping it was him. It wasn’t. An unknown voice on the other side of the line said something, and my biggest fear has come to life: Harry is hurt. He’s in the hospital and that I should come right away.

Tears start to form in my eyes, as I race to my car and start it up. As I drive to the hospital, my mind goes back to December. The 24th to be exact.

It was Christmas eve, and we were having dinner; just the two of us. When we both finished eating, Harry stood up and walked up to the window.

“Let’s go for a walk” he said.

I get up as well and walk over beside him. He puts his arm around my waist and holds me closely. His body is much bigger than mine, so he fits perfectly around me.  I put my head on his shoulder.

“But it’s snowing,” I finally reply, after a few moments of admiring the falling flakes.

“So? Come on, put on your jacket and let’s go,” he said while flashing his dimply smile. How could I say no to that? So I agree and we go to the closet and put on our jackets, boots, hats, scarfs and we exit through the door.

Harry grabs my hand as we walk through the snow, which sparkled as it reflected off the street lights. We headed with no destination in mind in complete silence. It wasn’t an awkward silence though. It was a comfortable one. After a few minutes we arrived at a playground. The same one we met at when we were both 16. I smiled, and so did he.

“Remember when we met?” he asked.

“Yes I do,” I simply said, remembering the moment. I couldn’t help but smile.

“I knew the minute I saw you, that I wanted you to be mine,” he continued, “and you don’t even know how happy I am that you are.”
