It was a strange night. The black grass of the field stretched out on all sides like the carpet of a haunted house and there were no stars visable it the sky. Not a breath of wind stirred the night. But then, above everything, the moon glowed fiercly like the sun but white and cold instead of golden and warm. The only tree for miles, a short thing with no leaves and dark grey bark that looked shabby and dead in the sunlight was now a thing of wonder and strength silhouetted in front of the full moon.
