Chapter Three (Amneris)

Neutral territory indeed, Amneris thought, remembering Colt's words.

She had not expected Tara's lackey to actually call her. How did he even have her number? That was what she really wanted to know. Either way, it was a gamble, and a risky one at that, but it gave her a chance to find out Tara's plan. Maybe.

Amneris felt a presence appear behind her. She gripped the hilt of the Lyriumian dagger hidden in the sand next to her and spun, stopping just short of his throat. Colt gripped the dagger's point and lowered it, giving her a nonchalant look. "Is this how you treat all people who magically appear?"

"Yes," she replied, settling back down. He sat next to her. She felt his gaze and shivered slightly, pulling her maroon hoodie tighter around herself. "What?"

"You look better without the cloak." He studied her for a moment longer. "Thought you would be older."

She looked him over in turn. "Thought you'd be younger, but no one's perfect." She held his gaze under her hood. "If you're attempting to win me over with flattery, it won't work."

Colt broke off first. "Worth a shot," he snorted. "I thought you might want to know Tara's plan."

"Indeed I do. However, I am sure that I will figure it out myself," she said.

"She wants to release Enliatu," he continued, ignoring her.

"She has a death wish." She rolled the diamond on her necklace between her fingers. "Saves me from doing it, though."

"This is not the time for jokes, Tenjo." She faced him at his tone. "We have to stop her from doing that. She has gone too far now."

"We," she repeated. "I'm sorry. I did not realise you and I were a team."

"You know how to kill him, or at the very least imprison him. I need to know what happened, how you did it."

"Need, do you?" she seethed, facing him properly. "What makes you think that I'm just going to roll over and tell you my secrets, Kymmer?" They held each other's gaze once again. Amneris broke off first. "I could show you quite easily. I just don't think I should." And it's personal.

"Why not?" Colt demanded.

She watched him, dumbfounded. "You're kidding, right?" She shot to her feet. "You work with Tara; the bloody DMS; Terpola!" She crossed her arms with an annoyed look. "Must I continue?"

"No," he replied. "I get the idea, but I do not want the whole multiverse destroyed. For that matter, I do not want either of you dead. That would cause even more drama than we can deal with."

"That my people can deal with, you mean." She rubbed the back of her neck. "Let me get this straight. Tara wants to break out Enliatu, and you want to stop her?"

"Pretty much," Colt answered.

"And you think the best way to do this is to team up with me?"

"Again, yes."

"You do realise that most people of whom I have teamed up with were killed in violent ways, don't you?" He nodded again. "Even knowing that, you still want to join me?"

"Of course."

"No way I can talk you out of this, huh?" Amneris sighed. "Gods, I'm so gonna regret this, aren't I?"

"Most definitely," he replied, grinning.

She gave him a stern look. "One chance. That's it. If you do anything to my people - bring harm to them in any way - I will kill you in stone cold blood using methods you could never imagine. Are we understood?"

"We are," Colt said, not backing away from her dark stare.

"Very well, then." She held out her hand and he shook it. Without saying a word, she zapped them both away.
