As soon as she walked into the room, she felt the tension. It was like a roped tied perfectly around her neck, cutting off any source of air to her lungs.
"Gabbie," Matt started getting up off the old mustard yellow couch. the couch that held so many happy memories of the two of them. Gabbie closed her hazel eyes. Her eyes only a few weeks ago had a beautiful shine to them, but ever since the incident happened the shine dulled and faded the vibrant colors.
"Matt, please. give it a break." Gabbie took a deep breath. " I really don't want to hear it. I'm going to bed; I have work in the morning. I'll bring out your pillow and you know where the extra blankets are." Gabbie finished before turning and heading to the bedroom they used to share.
"Gabbie!" Matt grabbed her wrist to stop her from leaving. "you cant keep avoiding this! we are engaged, can we please just talk about this?" Matt's eyes pleaded with her. His grip tightened causing the surrounding area to turn white.
"we 'were' engaged, as in past-tense! Matt you screwed up. it was your choice. there is nothing to talk about!" Her voice filled with anger and pain. "Matt let me go!" she demanded trying to pry his hands off her wrist.
"No! I'm never letting go of you Gabriella! I'm in love with you, I want to marry you! I screwed up. yes I fucking know this. don't you think I beat myself up everyday over this!? you cant keep avoiding me... avoiding the situa-"
"If you truly loved me..." Gabbie cut him off. " You wouldn't have needed 'her' Matt. I can never forgive you for that or let alone trust you anymore. You were doing it for a month.. A fucking month." Gabbie voice trembled, her eyes filled with the tears she has been holding back.
"Gabbie... I'm... I'm sorry" Matt whispered letting his grip on her go. Pain flashed in his eyes. Gabbie fell to her knees. loud sobs escaped her lips. with each cry a invisible knife stabbed Matt in the gut. He broke the only girl who loved him undoubtedly and stuck by his side through everything. Matt watched her cry. she sat on the floor curled into herself. each sob caused her small body to shake. her dark brown hair covered her face. Matt stood there, not sure if he should comfort her. He then noticed the small diamond ring he proposed to her with was absent from her left finger. 'I'm so sorry.' he thought to himself; knowing no apology would ever fix what he did. She trusted him with her heart and he smashed it in thousands of little pieces.
"Matthew..." Gabbie spoke, her voice barley above a whisper. "I want you to leave." She looked up at him, her eyes puffy and bloodshot from the tears. "You can grab you stuff next week. but I don't want you here any longer. please just go." Gabbie picked herself up off the floor and walked over to the front door and opened it.
"Gabbie.." Matt whispered; His blue eye became glossy. he bit back the tears threatening to escape.
"No, Matt. I don't want you to be with you anymore...It's over. Let's face it; it's been over for awhile but we just ignored it... I... I can't do it anymore Matt. I will always love you, but you broke my heart." Gabbie spoke softly. "This is goodbye Matt." she looked up at him. Her eyes swirled with so much emotion. it was like a tidal wave crashing into him, drowning him. Matt reluctantly walked towards the opened door. he stopped midway and softly grabbed the girl's hand in his placing his spare key in hers and held it there.
"I love you Gabbie." Matt whispered "Goodbye..." he placed a light kiss on her cheek and walked out the door and closed it behind him, hearing it lock in place. Walking down the long corridor he stopped and sat against the cold brick wall. In that moment is when his own heart broke, and he finally let the tears fall with their last goodbye replaying in his head.
