You sit at a table in Luke's diner, a cup of tea on the table and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in your hands. You glance around the café self-consciously. You take note that most everyone is on their computers or cellphones. You sigh and slightly shake your head, going back to reading your book.
"Refill on coffee, miss?" A man asks. You look up at him and your eyebrows raise slightly. He's dfferent than the waiter you had before. And much more handsome. He stares at you, waiting for an answer.
You blink and laugh nervously, blushing. "Uh, no, no, I have tea."He smiles. "Really? Well would you like a refill on your tea then?"
You nod. "I'd love that, thank you..." You strain to see if he has a name tag.
"Jess." He finishes for you.
"Thank you, Jess." You smile. He leaves and then comes back a couple of minutes later with a steaming cup of tea.
"There you are." He says, sliding the cup on to the table.
"Thank you."
"So, you're a Jane Austen fan?"
You nod, beaming. "You know of her? Most men don't."
Jess crosses his arms and smirk. "I am not most men." He retorts. You grin. "Let me guess, you're a Mr. Darcy girl?" He asks.
You laugh. "Is it that obvious?"
"Only to me." He winks. He sinks into the chair across from yours. "You know, it is so refreshing to see someone reading in here rather than being on their devices."
"I completely agree. It's crazy! I prefer a good book than my phone."
Jess smiles at you, admiration shining in his eyes. "Me too." He murmurs softly. "What's your name?"
"Y/N." You answer.
"It's so nice to meet you, Y/N."
"It's nice to meet you too, Jess." You grin. "How long have you worked here for?""Oh, I don't work here."
Your eyebrows draw and you frown in confusion. "You don't work here."
"Oh! No, I mean, I used to work here when I was a teenager. My uncle is the owner. I was just visiting him today and decided to help out a little." He explains.
"Ohhh, that makes sense. I wondered what happened to my other waiter." You laugh.
"I-I-I can get him back if you want me to." Jess says, hooking a thumb over his shoulder.
"No!" You exclaim. You blush. "I mean, no, I like you." You say softly. Your eyes widen and you blush deeper. "I mean, I don't like you. Well, I do like you, but I don't like you, like you." You blurt out. Your close your eyes and sigh. "I'll just...I'll just shut up now." You groan. You open your eyes and find Jess grinning at you. You sheepishly smile back.
———
Jess and you talk for the rest of the night, until closing. You really hit it off and the chemistry is so strong between you. You finally realize the time when Luke, Jess' uncle and the owner of the diner, starts to close down.
"Oh, my gosh, it's so late." You gasp.
"I thought you were going to help me, Jess. All you did was sit down and talk with that pretty girl." You hear Luke mutter. Jess flushes and smiles shyly at you.
You smile. "I-I really should be going." You say, gathering your things.
"Oh." Jess sighs sadly.
"It was so nice talking to you and meeting you." You tell him genuinely. You really don't want to leave. You just want to talk to him more.
"Are-are you doing anything tomorrow night?" Jess asks suddenly.
"I was just going to stay home and read."
"Would you, um, would you like to go out for dinner with me?"
You look at him and grin. "I'd-I'd love to." You stammer nervously.
"I'll meet you here around 5:30 and then we'll go from there?" Jess says.
"Sounds like a date." You reply.
He smiles. "It's a date."
You laugh nervously. "I'll-I'll see you tomorrow."
He grins happily. "I can't wait."
[THE END] I hope you liked it!
