Dear Mama…

I do not want to leave, but I have to… I have heard you crying, and I can see from the look on Padre’s face that there is not enough money. I have tried so hard to find a job here in Mexico, but it is no use. I am going to cross the border, and go to America.

I do not want to leave, but I have to. Our home is too small for you and Padre, and all of my brothers and sisters.

I hope you find this note on my desk in the morning. Living conditions here are not suitable; I know that Padre has been made redundant, and I think that sometimes we children can be a liability to you.

However, everything is better in America. Maybe I shall be able to earn money there, and send some to you and Padre.

That way, you and my sisters and brothers will not starve. Your life will be easier without me.

Please do not worry about me; please pray for me and please do not hate me for doing this. I promise that I will write to you regularly.

I do not want to leave, but I have to…

Your oldest daughter,

Asiyah
