Evil is evil, lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I’m not a pious hermit. I haven't done only good in my life. But if I’m to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all."

There is this one place called Novigard. The Witcher often travels there with his horse to collect some reward for a bounty given to him by the same guard captain every time. There is always a monster to kill, a drowner to be put to rest and occasionally, a curse to be lifted. One such task had earned the Witcher a deep scar on his cheek.

The place is a bit far away from the countryside, and it takes valuable time to reach it if you take the straight road, but there is a shortcut to that place. You would have to go through the No Man's Land. A place where multiple bodies were left unattended after a great battle had been waged between two great forces. Those bodies were later on possesed by demons, demons that are particularly attracted to places of violence and dispair. But the witcher was no mere weakling, he knew exactly how to deal with the things that plagued the world. He had taken the path before, and he proceeds to take the same path then.

After crossing the withered trees that mark the grim beginning of the battle torn landscape, he sees three dead drowners. Three arrows were sticking out from each of their heads, each one a perfect, clean shot. The arrow had the signs of elven craft. The Witcher quickly looked up to see an elf sitting right above his head on a tree branch with his arrow notched. The Witcher, with inhuman reflexes, dodges right out of the way of three well placed arrows. The elf sitting on the tree, with an equal amount of inhuman grace, bounces from  branch to branch dogging the witcher's daggers and landing straight before the Witcher, pointing his dagger at his face. The Witcher puts his arms up to show that he is just another human traveller, and the elf relaxes himself and lowers his arm as a sign of withdrawal.

After making friendly small talk, the Witcher learnt that a great bear had been driven mad by the thinness in the veil around them that lets demons interact with the world much more easily  than other populated areas. "Maybe i could help." said the Witcher, but the elf hunter politely declined his offer. "Why are you so far away from the other elves? Elven hunters usually always stick together as a team." "I am a freak. I was outcasted by them." says the elf.

"It's ok, I'm a freak too." says the Witcher "My unusual appearance and skills make me stand out quite well among "normal" people. What about you? I have seen you move with as much skill and grace as an eagle."

"People call me a freak, because I had fallen in love with a man."
