"There is a legend that tells of six individuals born every one hundred years who control the six elements: Air, Water, Earth, Fire, Light and Darkness. These beings (whatever creature they may be) keep balance and order in the world. That is, until one day, Light and Darkness came to a disagreement. It wasn't long before they resorted to violence and as a last resort, the other four Elementals separated them from their elements," Miss Jikan, the history teacher, read. "In hopes that they would stop their endless war."
Whisper half listened to the story. Her mind was currently focused on something more important. Today was her and her classmates fifteenth birthday. It also marked a hundred years since the last Elementals died, which means the new ones will be chosen today. Whisper, in all honesty, was scared of being an Elemental. To her, keeping the balance stable seemed difficult and stressful.
Whisper was a timid girl. She kept to herself mostly and rarely spoke a word. Some mistook her for being mute even though she wasn't. She could speak perfectly fine, she just didn't want to. She was rather odd looking (though most if her classmates were also) with her light grey skin, midnight purple hair, and black eyes, but she was considered normal among the other Darkness Potentials.
Each element has there own handful of Potentials and each group is labeled by the color of their robes- red for Fire, white for Air, blue for Water, green for Earth, gold for Light and purple for Darkness- and runes on their bracelets.
Whisper pulled up her sleeve just a tad to look at her bracelet. She gently touched the cool stone, lightly tracing the rune. She mouthed a silent prayer to the God above that things will go well.
She was quickly pulled out of her thoughts by Miss Jikan clapping her hands. "Our lesson has come to an end. You are now dismissed." The room burst with happy and excited chattering as everyone filed out. "Whisper, child." Whisper stopped where she was. She moved through the other students in different colored robes, making her way back over to her teacher. "What's wrong, child? You were staring at your bracelet during my lecture."
Whisper dropped her gaze back to her bracelet. Miss Jikan took Whisper's hand into her own, studying the rune.
Miss Jikan didn't have one on her wrist or had the traditional colored robes. She was at the age where she was no longer a Potential and had her bracelet broken and her robe burned. She now wore grey or beige robes.
The teacher let go of her hand and grasped her shoulder. "There's nothing to be nervous about, turning fifteen is a turning point in every child's life! Everyone goes through this at some point in their lives." Whisper looked up at her teacher, a small smile spreading on her face. She nods. "Thank you, Miss Jikan." She said softly. The teacher nods. "Now, go have fun before the ceremony."
Whisper practically skipped out of the room. "Oh! And Whisper," Miss Jikan called after her. "There's nothing shameful about being normal!"
