Perhaps we should go back to the beginning. The beginning being before the Dollars and before the chat. The beginning being how she met the headless driver, her perverted doctor, a man with the strength of an elephant, a collector named Tom, and a mouse who enjoyed his games.

Her name? Tentōmushi Kasai. Her age? Seventeen. Her grade? Third year in High School.

Tentōmushi, more commonly referred to as Ōji (a nickname from junior high that she adores), wanted to die. You read that right. She wanted to die. She was alone. No friends to talk to and no parents either. You see, Tentōmushi was living by herself and no one liked her after what they had heard about her. She was the outcast of her high school and she hated it. Now, you maybe wondering about her parents. Don't worry, they're not dead. Her mother and father had simply moved back to America because her older brother had gotten cancer. He has a wife and two daughters and her family wanted to help out. While Tentōmushi remained behind to finish her education, her parents and two younger sisters left for the states. As for her friends, Tentōmushi had none. After the story about how everyone thought she was a boy in Junior high was told, many people avoided her like the plague, simply choosing to believe that she crossdressed as a guy those two years for the hell of it. And now she was getting hell for her previous classmates lack of listening and observational skills. That was her reason for wanting to see the sky turn black.

This is how she met Izaya.

They met online, through a small chat group where she told him of all her troubles. How she was bullied day in and day out because of rumors and dumb classmates and how she was sick of living, but... She also admitted she was afraid of death. Izaya, who was going by a different handle, a different name, faked empathy. Said he understood what she was going through and so the two chatted, until one particular day.

On that one day, she was going to school like normal. She was going to stand up for herself. She was going to stop being afraid of two things, stop herself from doing the other. And stop herself from letting these girls win. What she didn't account for was the gang hanging around the alley way she normally took a short cut through to get to school. Nor did she account for the fact that this gang would grab her and use chloroform on her, attempting to knock her out. She would feel the hit of a bat on the back of her head, but she would not feel them tying her up. She wouldn't know this until after the fact, when she woke up in a different place, her head covered in bandages and the sound of chattering outside of the room she was currently sleeping in. Slipping out of the futon, she noticed an almost too big pajama shirt covering her body and a faint blush dusted her cheeks.

She was quiet in step, having learned such techniques as a child for when she wanted a late night snack. Her father would catch her and they'd share ice cream, chattering until she fell asleep on the couch, blanket over her and pillow fixed under her head. Poking her head around the corner, she was surprised to see four people outside in the living room and kept quiet as she listened. She really wish she had her glasses.

"Whatever the cost is for her treatment, we'll pay it Shinra. Just give us the price," one voice said. She could only assume it was the dark blob that had said that.

"No way Tom," said another, Shinra, she guessed. "This one is on the house. Knowing Izaya, he probably planned this whole scheme to gauge her reaction and see if she is truly the human he so desperately loves."

Another voice spoke. "I'm gonna smash that smug flea's face in. To think, he orders the kidnapping of kids and then sends Celty there to fight the bastards he hired and retrieve his toys for him. Only so he can mess with them more," the voice snarled.

"Calm down Shizuo," Tom said. "Getting mad about it now is only going to make you too tired to fight anyone later. Besides, I'm sure the girl fought back. She was bleeding from her head after all, so the chloroform didn't work."

She saw one of the two dark blobs move, a black one this time, and it seemed like it was holding something up. "Yeah. You're right Celty. I'm gonna go check on the shrimp. See if she's awake yet."

Tentōmushi froze. She didn't think that anyone would check on her and she almost facepalmed at her own stupidity. Quickly stepping out from her hiding place, she cocked her head sideways after having drawn the attention of the group. "Um... Hi," she said, her head returning to its normal, upright position as she rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly. "Have you guys seen my glasses by chance?"

And that is the story of how she nearly died.
