Y/N
When they took my mom and my brother, Julio, away in the ambulance, I sat in the kitchen, wrapped in a blanket with blood still all over me.
I had stopped crying and now I just stare at the opening leading to the living room. Where my family all died. First Papa overdosed on the couch, now Julio and Mamí.
The police officers asked me some questions before another ambulance came and got me. I didn't talk the whole way there. Even when I got out and they put me in foster care, I didn't talk to anyone.
I went silent for about 7 years. That was until I met Ariana. My best friend that was a year older than me, but about a whole foot shorter than me. I was already 5'3 at 13, she was 4'5.
She told me how she never knew her parents and her big brother barely raised her. He was a male prostitute, so he was gone all night and slept all day. She hardly ate and was near dead when a neighbor found her on the porch one hot afternoon.
She passed out, but the lack of water and food almost ended her. How she told the story, she told it bluntly and without much emotion. That got me to talk.
A few years later, we got to Rydell's Foster Center together. She was with the girls, I had to be with the boys. That day I tried to kill myself, she blew up on me, calling me a selfish jerk.
That's when I stopped talking again, this time, I refused to speak regardless. I was called Silent Shoelaces by that fucking Blake guy. I continued to fight him until I got kicked out.
Ariana and I lost touch shortly after.
I lived on the cold streets for about a year until my 18th birthday. I've seen shit that haunts me to this day. I've seen people, yes, people get raped and I've witness a lot of murders. I even got close to being another body on the ground and forced to give away the only shoes I had at that moment.
My mind drifts back to...that night. I remember opening my eyes once the gunshot sounded and seeing the dead look in my brother's eyes.
The blood, oh, God, there was so much blood. The dirty carpet was drenched in it. The bandana covering Mamí's face. Julio's matted hair. Oh, God-
"Y/N? A-are you alright?" Normani's worried voice rings in my ear over the music. I pull away from her, feeling nauseous.
I run out of the venue towards the bathrooms. I hunch over the towel, emptying the contents in my stomach. My chest burns a few minutes later as I gasp for a breath.
I sit down next to the toilet, wiping my mouth with a tissue and flushing the toilet. My eyes watered and fresh tears stream down my face. Pathetic sobs leaving my mouth.
The door opening makes me bite my lip t keep the sobs in.
"Y/N? Are you in here?" I hear a voice. Ally. She gently pushes the door open, eyebrows furrowed sadly. "Honey, what happened?" I shake my head, undoing my bowtie and the first two buttons on my shirt.
I take my phone out, unlocking it and typing in my notepad.
Flashbacks. I'll be fine.
"Doesn't seem like it. I mean, you're crying." I sigh, looking over at her. She sits down next to me. "You don't have to tell me what you saw, but your past doesn't define you."
I type again.
It does if its the reason you wouldn't talk to anyone. I won't even talk to Lauren and she's my cousin.
"I can't say I understand, and I won't say it'll be okay, because I don't know, but it will get better, boo. You'll make it through with the help of God and your friends and family. You're by far the strongest person I know. No matter what you think about yourself, you're amazing, brave, and so beautiful," she finishes with a smile and a kiss on my damp cheek.
I give her hopeful eyes, "Yes, and I really mean everything I said." After a minute, I nod. The door opens again, followed by my cousin's voice.
"Y/N? Ally?" Her and the rest of the girls spot Ally and me on the floor. "Y/N, what's wrong?" Normani asks. Ally looks over at me and we get up.
We get out of the stall and I type up:
I'm okay now. Ally and I talked.
Lauren looks at her graciously, thanking her. She then looks over at me and brings me in for a hug. "You scared me, Y/NN." I feel tears starting to form up again.
"You scared us all, but we're glad you're okay," Dinah says as they all join in the hug.
When our moment was over, I wipe my eyes, smiling at them. I type:
You guys are the best. I love you
"We love you, too, Y/N," Ally says, pitting an arm around Camila's waist. I smile bigger.
"Hey, why don't we all leave and go to my house?" Camila suggests. Everyone looks at me for confirmation and I nod.
"Lemme call my mom to get us," Dinah says, getting her phone out of her purse. Normani looks at me with a sympathetic expression.
I'm fine, mama. Really
"Okay, I'm just...worried. I thought I did something." I shake my head, putting a finger to my lips.
It was my own thoughts.
She nods.
"Okay, she's on her way. Let's wait in the lobby."
-----
After Camila's mom made us dinner, we all went up to her room and I played my music.I played a mix of Lana, The Weeknd, Panic!, and Halsey. We danced around and played like kids. It was nice; I loved it. I'm glad Milika took us to get changed before we got to Camila's.
Honestly, that tux was really uncomfortable.
I changed into sweats and a band tee while the others dressed in sleepwear. Dinah and Normani had on shirts and shorts, Lauren wore a tank top and pajama pants, and Camally wore onesies. They're adorable.
Camila gave Laurinah her bed while her and Ally slept in Sofi's room. The nine year old was at their grandparent's house.
Normani and I had to sleep on an air mattress in Camila's spacious room. Laurinah had since fell asleep after Dinah failed to get Lauren to kiss her goodnight.
Mani has her head on my shoulder and her arm draped over my torso. "Y/N?" She asks, looking up at me. Even in the darkness of the room, her eyes shone beautifully.
"I, uh, had a great time," I smile at her, rubbing her lower back. She sighs contently, "Good night, Y/N." A few minutes later, I hear light snores. I chew on my bottom lip, nervous to do what I've been wanted to do since I realized my love for her.
I originally was gonna ask her out, but my stupid past wanna show up.
I open my mouth, preparing myself. Then, I say as softly as I can.
"I-I love you, Mani."
