It was finally, officially the weekend. I just finished the graveyard shift at work and I was excited to get to my house and devour the tub of ice cream in my freezer. Normally after my Friday night shift my best friend Ashley would drive me home. Seeing how her boyfriend who had been out of town the last two weeks for work was back. I knew that they would want to do as the rabbits do so I told her not to worry I could handle walking home it wouldn't kill me.
What I didn't realize was that it would be absolutely freezing by nightfall. It was 70s all day but the second the sun dipped below the horizon the temperature dropped to the low 40s. The thin tee-shirt that got me through the day provided no warmth for me as I sped walked home. I walked along the perimeter of the woods to avoid being in the line of sight for creeps.
My house came into view and I excitedly did a little dance knowing I would soon be free of the cold. Though I still wanted my ice cream god damn it. A whimper from within the woods brought me to a stop. Was there an animal in pain? I walked closer to the sound and eventually came upon a big black dog. As I came closer I realized his paw was bent at an odd angle and his fur was matted with something.
I slowly approached him and knelt by his side to inspect the damage that had been done. His paw didn't have any bones sticking out so either it was just severely fractured or it was a small break I assumed. When I put my hand on his side he let out a heart breaking whine and I quickly lifted my hand only to find it covered in blood. Doing as little touching as possible I checked him for scratches of some sort but found that his fur hid giant gouges in him.
He looked close to death and I couldn't bare to leave such a beautiful animal to die alone in the cold. I pulled out my keys and put them in my mouth then slowly picked up the dog earning some whimpers and growls. Once I had him properly settled in my arms he seemed to settle feeling content. I stood up carefully and made my way to my house. Although I don't know how I made it because he was insanely heavy.
Once inside I brought him to my room and placed him on my bed. It broke my heart that there were no open pet hospitals near me the closest was 4 hours away. I grabbed some peroxide and towels at tried to tidy up his wounds. Every time I touched him he would whimper in pain and I couldn't continue with that heartbreaking sound in my ears. I sat on my across from him and just admired the black beauty. I had never seen a dog like this before. Then I froze "You're not a dog are you?" I whispered realizing that this was a wolf. He let out a soft yip as if happy that I realized what he was.
Now exhausted by the events I stood and took off my clothes including my bra and threw on an oversized shirt. I normally sleep in just my panties but it felt weird doing so with something in the bed with me. I crawled into my bed and snuggled next to the wolf careful not to actually touch him. I soon drifted off to sleep.
I woke up to the sound of the wolf whining and scratching at my door. Immediately realizing he needed the bathroom I jumped out of my bed and ran out the door and opened the back door for him. He sprinted off into the woods behind my house and I figured that was the last I would see of the wolf. I closed the door and decided since I'm up now why not have breakfast.
Opening the freezer looking for some eggos my sight stumbled upon my uneaten ice cream. Deciding that I deserved a treat for helping an animal I grabbed a spoon and the sweet dessert. Jumping up on the counter I dove into the sweet treat. Maybe 5 minutes later there was a scratching at my back door. At first I ignored it but then a whine soon followed and I realized the wolf came back.
I hopped off the counter and opened the door to find the wolf patiently waiting to enter. As he entered I realized he looked much better then he did last night. I bent down beside him to look over his wounds but I barely could because of the dried blood that was still on him. Deciding he was better enough to handle a bath that's what I gave him.
